Hotel Grand Chancellor we stayed in in Hobart!

A nice surprise was delivered by the receptionist the moment when we checked in: Our room was upgraded to Superior Harbour view twin room due to fewer bookings in the off-season! What a beautiful kick-off to a delightful journey in east coast of Tasmania!

9/11/14---Tour around the Penitentiary Chapel & Criminal Court, which has been listed as historical site of national significance!

This compound was built in 1827-1828 for both convicts' confinements and the free settlers's worship place, while the ever-increasing numbers of convicts over-crowded Hobart's convict accommodation and the free citizens crowed the existing Anglican church.

A colonial architect John Lee Archer was appointed to this building's design by then Lt-Governor Arthur. Archer designed this compound building with 36 solitary confinement cells underneath a penitentiary. There was a clock tower of Georgian style situating on top of the penitentiary, to which a separate entrance for the free settlers was built.

This construction has been, to this day, acknowledged as one of the finest colonial architectures in Australia!

I am still reliving this lovely trip now and jot it down, so I can have some wonderful memories to track back to when I grow old!

The two courtrooms with associated offices, judge chambers and jury boxes came into effective function in 1859 on this site and kept its various use until 1983!

It seemed that jury system came in effect since forever in Australia on an ideal ground that trial by jury enables the ordinary public to decide a suspect's guilt or innocence and is an important safeguard against the judges' power who are appointed by the government over the suspects' lives!

Parole system commences in 1976 in Tasmania after the authorities found that the criminal conducts had not dropped as expected while the death sentences and long term imprisonment were in place.

fantastic! I know that Tasmania is the perfect place to learn about Australian's early history. yping has got the experience in first-hand. You wouldn't skip over this chapter of Tasmania as i expected.

Story untold officially about this lady's miserable marriage: She married to an alcoholic husband and stayed in it for 10 odd years, and their relationship had been described toxic and abusive. 6 years before Margaret murdered her abusive husband, she was pulled out of Derwent river unconscious post a suicidal attempt due to the unbearable domestic violence committed against her by her forever drunk husband.

Eventually, one afternoon, she killed him during another of his drunken rampage. Margaret was found twice by a patrol constable sitting out in front of their house and showed incoherent accounts of her doing when questioned by the constable. Under the suspicion, the constable entered their house and discovered her husband's lifeless body!

What a family tragedy that still carries on everywhere in the world!

You are absolutely right about Tasmania, yearshappy! I wouldn't miss this chapter for the world, I actually feel like that I have known Australia's past a little bit better now after this trip!

Later on in my post, I am gonna talk about once again the convict history while I take you all through Port Arthur's historic attraction!

Some convicts and their committed crimes, as you could read that some of the crimes weren't as grievous as the current ones for bearing the same gravity in the modern system!

I wonder what an innocent age the Great Britain could have been in those years!

The way the cross was made gave away the original background of the designer---This guy was initially from either Scotland or Ireland!
