Sydney is mourning the passing of the two hostages in yesterdays siege, both of whom acted heroically before their deaths. Katrina Dawson shielded a pregnant co-worker, and Cafe’ manager Tori Johnson tried to wrestle the weapon away from the attacker, allowing some of the hostages to escape.
Tori is survived by his partner of 14 years, Thomas Zinn, and he and Tori’s family released this heartbreaking statement:
“We are so proud of our beautiful boy Tori, gone from this Earth but forever in our memories as the most amazing life partner, son and brother we could ever wish for”
Some people have been asking why it’s necessary to point out he was a “Gay hero,” and not just a “hero.” Because, as the Huffington Post points out, Tori Johnson died a second class citizen.
