I just watched a documentary of Eyre Lake called "Salt" (www.imdb.com/title/tt1454539/) several days ago, and found that I could barely understand the dialogs.
Is Australian accent prevalent among people in cities?
Australian accent is class based rather than location based. A broad sounding Strine is usually spoken by working class people. It can be gender based too as some well educated females would adopt a posh English accent which is not usually found among men.
