Homosexuality is one of the three main categories of sexual orientation, along with bisexuality and heterosexuality, within the heterosexual-homosexual continuum. Currently the most common adjectives in use are lesbian for women and gay for men, though gay can to refer to either men or women. The number of people who identify as gay or lesbian — and the proportion of people who have same-sex sexual experiences — are difficult for researchers to estimate reliably for a variety of reasons.[4] In the modern West, major studies indicate a prevalence of 2% to 13% of the population.[5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15] A 2006 study suggested that 20% of the population anonymously reported some homosexual feelings, although relatively few participants in the study identified themselves as homosexual.[16] Homosexuality is widely encountered in the animal kingdom.[17][18]

According to the U.S. Census Bureau 2000, 1.5% label themselves as gay. The 10% quoted is a myth. According to polls and public advocacy groups, at least 10% of the United States population labels themselves as homosexual.
There are no specific percentages of how many homosexuals live in America because many gays can be fearful and not 'come out of the closet.' Some gays are more vocal about their sexuality, while others prefer to keep it in their private lives and live their life in society as a heterosexual. Some even try marriage with the opposite sex to see if they can change. It seldom works.
More recently, data has been collected in America, during the ten-year national census, on married and unmarried-partner households. They did not ask the actual sexual orientation of the respondents, so there is no measure of single gay people, nor is their a measure of those gay people in committed relationships but not living together. Whilst the census cannot give us a figure for the number of people who are gay in America, it can inform us on how many same-sex partnership households identified themselves in the survey. The 2000 census tells us that ... there are 105.5 million households in the USA; 5.5 million of these consist of unmarried partnerships; of these, 595,000 consist of same sex partners. This can be interpreted as there being nearly 1.2 million gay people living with a same sex partner in America."
Many groups sympathetic to homosexual rights say 10% of the populace is homosexual. More neutral sources speak of 3 to 5 percent. The truth may be a matter of how one defines "homosexual"
If we are counting those who are exclusively practicing homosexuality, it is probably the lower figure. If we are counting any who have at any time ever had any type of homosexual encounter, then the number is probably 10%, or even higher.
