Are you bored with your job?

Six months into your new job, you’re finding it hard to get up for work every morning. Lurking beneath your apathy is a role that’s become dull and uninspiring - the slow pace and mind-numbing tasks are driving you round the bend.

But it needn't be this way. The following tips will have you climbing out of your job rut - and your bed - faster than you can say ‘reformed clock watcher.’

Work out why you’re bored
Job boredom is caused by many factors. Undemanding work, monotonous tasks, lack of social interaction, and meaningless duties can all contribute – but they each require different solutions. So before you set about solving your desk doldrums, determine the root cause.

Ask for more responsibility
Frustrated by a lack of responsibility? Set up a meeting with your manager to request extra accountability. Be sure to mention how well you’re meeting your current duties, and back up your claims with proof. Then boost your chances of success by suggesting additions to your job description that will benefit your employer too.

Request an internal transfer
Many people find that changing jobs and responsibilities, but staying with the same employer, is a great boredom-buster. Internal transfers also come with perks: you’re already familiar with your employer’s clients, products, and corporate culture. And retaining your accrued annual leave means you can take that exotic annual holiday this year after all.

Look for a new job
This one sounds obvious, but if your workaday boredom has turned into resentment and you can’t find a positive to cling to, it’s time to start job hunting. Kick start your search by preparing your resume, drafting a cover letter, visiting job websites, and putting the word out to recruiters that you’re back in the market for a job.

Change job industries
Just because your current job is lacklustre doesn’t mean you should throw the baby out with the bathwater. Pursuing job opportunities outside your industry involves less risk than a complete career change, and is increasingly common. Just bear in mind that a subtle industry change is likely to be more successful than a drastic one, and you may have to take a step backward to move forward.

Make a complete career change
On the other hand, if you’re certain that a career change is for you, think about your transferable skills before you select a new job that interests you. Also consider how your life experiences could be used in your next career. For example, travelling the world, planning your wedding, raising children, and running a household all use skills that can be applied to corporate settings too.
