Warsaw gay rights march draws insultsAAPJune 3, 2012, 10:44 am

Poland's annual gay rights parade set out along a new route through central Warsaw designed to protect marchers from counter-demonstrations. Nonetheless, run-ins occurred when insults - and eggs - were reportedly thrown at participants.
Organisers said they changed the parade's route a day before the event because 13 registered counter-demonstrations were legal and, thus, could not be stopped by police or city officials.
Some 4000 to 5000 people marched, according to organisers, under the slogan "Simply Equality" in a parade that demanded equal rights for homosexuals and minorities. There was a heavy police presence, as well as volunteers providing security. The annual event has been banned in the past and still sparks tensions.
Ultra-nationalists protested nearby carrying signs ironically "thanking" Warsaw Mayor Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz for "promoting Euro-sodomy and HIV".
Tensions rose when a small group waving a flag of the labour union Solidarity, known for their protests against communism in the 1980s, also waved a sign saying that homosexuals "should build their own Warsaw" if they want to "parade in the streets".
Opponents yelled insults and eggs were reportedly thrown at some participants in the parade, reported the Interia news website.
But there were no serious incidents as the parade wound down on Saturday evening. Concerts and celebrations after the parade were slated to run later into the night.
Participants waved signs reading "MPs, come out of the closet," while demonstrators from Belarus waved a poster reading "It is better to be gay than a dictator". Others danced to techno music atop floats decorated with the rainbow-coloured gay rights flags.
