Recruitment activity is now showing clear signs of moving back to a seller's market. That is, the candidate is king! Of course, there are always variations and exceptions, and it does not mean that candidates have the power to demand exorbitant salaries, but the shortage of suitable candidates for most positions and the fact that some companies are very keen to hire again, has turned the market full circle from where we were about 18 months ago (it started to turn in mid 2010). Not everything in the garden is rosy, of course - the high Aussie dollar has its effect on exports, but, hey, it's great if you're going overseas on holiday! Then again, we know of certain organisations who have been struggling, but by and large, companies are venturing back into recruitment waters again, while some have never been out of the water.
What does this mean re salaries? It certainly doesn't give everyone a blank cheque. I have seen some candidates ask for rather dramatic salary hikes. Though if your salary is well below median then you could be forgiven for looking for a 30% uplift - just be realistic, is our advice. One can chase dollars or one can seek job stimulus, occasionally they go together, but we would always suggest that finding the job that really motivates you is far better, as long as the money on offer is within acceptable industry norms. The problem is that one person's expectation as to what is an industry norm can differ greatly from another's. Candidates who say to me "I am looking for the industry average (salary)" inevitably receive the withering and carefully crafted reply from me "OK, what do you see as the industry average for your level of experience?" Everyone has a different view, and if we feel that your expectations are just a bit unrealistic (in either direction), then we will give you our advice on the matter. No extra charge!
Skill shortages are starting to re-appear in core areas eg embedded software, RF systems, PLC applications, FPGA design and so on. But we know that a good number of our loyal supporters keep us in touch with where they are at and when they could be ready for a move. So, we are always ready to talk. Talking leads to mutual understanding and this leads to good job prospects and all round satisfaction. At least, that's what I keep telling myself. |
