Organisers of the Golden Globes awards show believe Ricky Gervais went too far with his jokes while hosting the ceremony yesterday and will never invite him back, according to reports.

Philip Berk, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), which runs the ceremony, told the Hollywood Reporter that he thought Gervais went overboard.

"He definitely crossed the line. And some of the things were totally unacceptable. But that's Ricky," Berk said.

"I had absolutely no idea what Ricky was going to say so anything I heard was heard was the same time you heard it. When you hire Ricky Gervais, you expect the unexpected."

Gervais even took a jab at Berk as he introduced him onto the Beverly Hilton Hotel stage in Los Angeles, saying he had to help him off the toilet and "pop his teeth in".

Berk made it clear that the HFPA did not stand by Gervais's brutal jabs at the Hollywood celebrity pack, which also targeted A-list stars from Johnny Depp to Bruce Willis.

"Any of the references to individuals is certainly not something the Hollywood Foreign Press condones," he said.

Earlier this morning (AEDT) the HFPA issued a separate statement to Entertainment Weekly which followed a similar vein.

"We loved the show. It was a lot of fun and obviously has a lot of people talking. When you hire a comedian like Ricky Gervais, one expects in your face, sometimes outrageous material," the statement read.

"Certainly, in this case, he pushed the envelope and occasionally went too far. The HFPA would never condone some of his personal remarks. Overall, however, the show was among the best we’ve ever had and we were pleased."

Rob Shuter, a journalist with PopEater, quoted an unnamed HFPA member who allegedly told him Gervais will never host the awards show again.

"Ricky will not be invited back to host the show next year, for sure," the HFPA member was quoted as saying.

"For sure any movie he makes he can forget about getting nominated. He humiliated the organization last night and went too far with several celebrities whose representatives have already called to complain."

But despite the apparent outrage among the Hollywood elite, the British comic said he was happy with his performance.

"This year, I went about right. If anyone was offended, then I don't care," he told TVGuide.com.

Gervais, hosting the event for the second consecutive year, earned boos and cheers for his biting jokes.

He poked fun at Angelina Jolie and Depp and their latest film The Tourist while they sat with their partners at the ceremony.

He also alluded to the questioned sexual orientation of high-profile Scientologists and referred to Bruce Willis as "Ashton Kutcher's dad".

The US press had mixed reactions to Gervais' performance, with the majority negative.

It was so controversial that there were fears he had been fired mid-show after he did not appear on stage for close to an hour during the show's live broadcast.

But Gervais said his absence was all part of the show's schedule, the New York Daily News reports.

"I did every single introduction I was meant to. There just happened to be a long gap," Gervais said in a statement to the newspaper.
