Hehe, I am not very interested in IELTS. However, I found this quote interesting, which I could only read half way, and then get lost in those words.
It is from Alice's Adventure in Wonderland. Alice could not figure it out, me either.

i think it equals to "you should be what it might appear to others that what you were or might have been was not what you had been would have appeared to them to be otherwise."

I guess generally it is saying that we should maintain a consistency of our behaviours and characters, right?
