Committing extended long warrant period is a successful marketing strategy for Littleswan, a local washing machine provider in China.

The common warrant period is 3-5 years for washing machines, and sometimes additional condition is added, such as the damage is not caused by the user intentionally. However, in a latest ads campaign, Littleswan promised 10 years warrant to any washing machine sold between the campaign launch date and Mar 31st of 2010. The buyers would get a VIP card as a certification of this premium service. Any damage in 10 years could be fixed for free, no element cost, no labor cost and even no home service fee. As for most family, Repairing household applications is costly and very inconvenient. Littleswan’s commitment really attracted a lot customers’ attention and proved to be a tempting reason for choosing this brand.

This warrant might turn to an empty one, because 10 years are such a long time. New technology will definitely replace old one, as a result, old model production may be ceased, so does its elements production. The skillful worker may retire in the meanwhile as well. Without the right material and man, how can Littleswan fixes customers’ machine then? Although I honestly doubt that Littleswan can really keep its word, for customers, this promise is fairly enough. Since the worse case they can foresee is that the machine breaks down in couple of years, and cannot be repaired, just the same as if they bought other brands. Same risk plus additional promise made the customers buy in the idea.

Littleswan must have considered the consequence of failing to provide the future service. Some customers may sue it. However, I believe very few customers would bother to do so in China, as it’s not cost-effective. You may be drown in an endless sue case, and wait for years before a sentence be achieved. Maybe, Littleswan can easily calm down such customers by providing a free new machine, which costs very little to the company.

What is appropriate to ask and what is not. The answer varies from culture to culture, or even person to person. Normally, it’s not polite to ask anything related with a person’s privacy, such as age, income, marriage status, unless you have had a very good relationship with the person. In China, there is an interesting way of asking personal questions. It works like to trade one’s own privacy with the other’s. A man may start with “Hi, I’m 30 years old, and how about you?” The undergoing rule is, since I’ve shown my trust to you by telling you this, you’re sort of obliged to share the same with me. However, I don’t felt this is fair to the person who has been asked. For in the end, he might not intend to know what he has been told but is trapped into such a deal.

With the increasing growth of the population in big cities, governments have to face a serious problem, lacking of houses. Some people think that the problem is so serious that only policymakers can tackle it.In contrast,in my opinion, not only can governments compact the problem, the organisations and individuals are responsible to alleviate the situation as well.

Obviously, governments play a key role in solving the housing shortage. As the maker of a variety of policies, only the authorities has the rights of planning the city layout. In the designing process, the government should concentrate on the demand of residential lands, and encourge the property developers to construct more residential buildings for the citizens as far as possible.Through other measures, for instance, reducing the tax revenue, the government can guide the consumers to buy small and suitable houses. In addition,in order to control the population in big cities, the government should bridge the gap between the urban area and the rural area.

Also, corporations can help the government to combat the hard situation. Some factories may move to the outskirts of the city and build perfect living facilities, thereby attracting the staff to live there.

In terms of the individuals,we can buy a suburban house to solve this problem. In this way, not only purchase cost can be saved, we can also enjoy a good living environment: fresh air, no noise and so on.

In summary, the urban housing shortage should not just rely on the government's efforts. Apart from the government's macro regulation and control, organisations and individuals can also make efforts to alleviate the situation.

To order the right food in a restaurant is a big challenge, because you not only need to know which dishes are tasty, but also should keep in mind to check if they accompany each other well. It's so hard especially in a country of significant different culture from your own. Once in a dinner with a client, the host gave me the chance to choose desserts and drinks myself. I was lost in the long list menu and confused by those strange names. In the end, I picked up the most familiar two – ice-cream and green tea. That proved to be the worst match I ever had, the cold ice-cream and hot green tea. So asking for help or suggestion is safer whenever you feel uncertain in ordering food.

Ordering the right food in a restaurant is a big challenge, because you not only need to know which dishes are tasty, but also you should make sure they go well together.

Recently my cousin’s wife and her nephew visited and stayed with us for a week. In fact they came for a big exhibition hold in the city I live, and took my place as free hotel. I never have met her before, and didn’t know how she looked like and what kind of person she was. But since my aunt, her mother-in-law, called me and said they needed to stay for two or three days here, I could not refuse. It was not comfortable to have two strangers hanging around. In addition, my husband was so busy that week that he often got home very late. Therefore I had to look after my little kid and at the same time to treat my guests alone. I felt so exhausted and might have shown my unhappiness on my face. In the last night they stayed here, my guest tried to give me some money as gift, saying she had thought to buy some toys for my kid but didn’t know what was suitable. Surely I refused it, however felt embarrassed. I really hope such things won’t happen again.

Encouraging children to do some suitable paid work has become popular for parents in my country. I believe this is a positive trend, and it can benefit children very well in a long run.

For a long time, Chinese parents hold the belief that the top task of children, especially those in school, is study. Dong anything not related to textbooks is regarded as waste of time. Moreover, some parents worry about children’s safety in a paid job, since they’re still not mature either physically or mentally, and may not be able to protect themselves under some unexpected situations.

However these do not approve to be a problem, if we keep strict control on what kind of work children should do, also on the time they should spend. It’s not hard to find a proper job in the neighborhood. For example, part-time job in a fast food restaurant like MacDonald, one hour a day after school or couple of hours in weekends should be a good choice. Paid work generates extra pocket money, which children normally treasure more than the ones from parents, because it’s a reward to their hard work. The work experience can also make teenagers understand that life is not easy and money never comes in for free. As a result, they normally become more careful in spending money, more responsible for their family and more considerate when dealing with their parents. Furthermore, part-time jobs open a new window to the outside world for children, by providing opportunities to meet all different kinds of people, instead of only parents, teachers, schoolmates. They may face big challenges but at the same time learn how to handle them with appropriate guidance. As time passes by, they will be more skillful and even make new friends. Such kind of interpersonal skills are useful through their whole lives and cannot be learn from textbooks.

To conclude the argument, paid work is good for children’s growth. Its advantages can overweight the disadvantages as long as it is well selected and children are under proper supervision.
