BIG BROTHER CARES
December 4th, 2009 12:00 AM
As we enter the new holiday season, a number of other organizations around the world are making it possible for the less fortunate to celebrate the holidays, and our Big Brother friends are going to do their part to help! Some friends of the campaign are putting together a charity event featuring Big Brother Alumni in New Hampshire this weekend, so we thought this would be the perfect time to share some recent BB photos with you. Some have really gotten into the spirit of giving and deserve to be recognized!
Steven Daigle, Big Brother 10's gay rodeo cowboy (above), is an extremely active and fervent NOH 8 supporter via Twitter. Not a day goes by he doesn't encourage his massive Big Brother following to check out the campaign, and we can't thank him enough for all he does to bring us attention and support!
BB9's Chelsia Hart stopped by the same day as Steven to pose for her photo.
Big Brother 11's Michele Noonan (below) came in during one of our open calls, and even picked up her own NOH8 bracelet beforehand. We're happy to have her support!
Michele wasn't the only BB11 cast member to come out for the cause. We were also fortunate enough to have best friends Kevin Campbell and Lydia Tavera in for their photos together! Kevin naturally brought his trademark sunglasses, and Lydia used her make up talents to create a special look just for her photo.
For those that missed it, BB11's controversial Chima Simone.
Big Brother All Stars' Marcellas Reynolds
This Sunday, December 6th, the Big Brother Fan Club will be holding their 2nd Annual Toys for Tots Drive at the Portsmouth Family Moose Lodge (1163 Sagamore Ave) in Portsmouth, NH. The organizer, Panther Kitty, stopped by our impromptu NH shoot over the Thanksgiving holiday!
Lydia, Michele, and other Big Brother Alumni will be on-hand to meet and greet and, of course, take your donations. If you're in the area, please take a few minutes to bring a NEW, UNWRAPPED toy and say hello! You'll be responsible for the smile on a child's face this Christmas morning. Tell them NOH8 sent you! HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
November 26th, 2009 12:310 AM
As we head into this Thanksgiving Weekend, we wanted to take a moment and thank all of you for your incredible support of our campaign. We've grown so much, and we owe our success to each and every one of you who have helped to spread the message about ending hate. Whether you've been here in the studio, marched in a rally, taken your own NOH8 photo in your bathroom at home, or Re-Tweeted about one of our photo shoots, you've each been an important part of raising awareness and letting the world know that discriminating against or denying the rights of ANY group of people is hateful and wrong.
Thanks to the overwhelming support of the community, the City of West Hollywood has even decided to make December 13th Official NOH8 Day! We are incredibly gracious to everyone involved, and encourage all of you to continue checking back here for some upcoming announcements about this very special day in the weeks to come. We're honored!
WhiteKnot.org Founder Frank Voci
For those of you in New England, you will have your first chance to join the NOH8 Campaign this coming FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 27TH from 2-4PM at Alvirne High School in Hudson, New Hampshire. Co-Founder Jeff Parshley is an alumni of the school! If you have the time and are closeby, be sure to check it out.
Anthrax's Scott Ian and wife, singer Pearl Aday
Don't forget that you can also help show your support for the campaign daily by buying your own NOH8 bracelet at our online store. Kristen Lau, an avid supporter, gifted Lady Gaga with her very own bracelet at a recent Meet and Greet. Thanks for helping spread the word Kristen, and thank you Lady Gaga for posing! Now if we could only get you in our studio for an official photo... let's set it up! What better way to say "thank you" to our supporters by featuring some of our favorite photos from the past few open shoots? We've included them throughout this post, and have even more below. Have a safe and happy holiday weekend everyone!

KARDASHIANS AGAINST H8!
November 17th, 2009 12:00 AM
The Kardashians are no strangers to the spotlight. As their show proves, their images are all over the media. The girls decided to use their power of exposure to reach out to their fans and the public to help spread the word about inequality and speak out against discrimination. Kim, Khloe, and Kourtney got together and stopped by the NOH8 studio last week to lend their faces to our campaign. It was important to Kimto face the issue head-on, posing powerfully into the camera.
Khloe, who was recently married to Lakers' player Lamar Odom,
spoke out against how personal the issue of marriage equality for everyone is to her. As we've mentioned here on the blog before, interracial marriages used to be illegal and were those laws still in place today, she and her husband would never have been allowed to marry.
Kourtneytalked about her future child, and how she wanted to be a part of creating a world where everybody is treated equally. The girls also posed with one of our ALL NEW "ALL LOVE NOH8" cotton t-shirts that they graciously signed and stuck with their duct tape. We've printed a limited amount of these shirts, which are on sale now in the NOH8 Store.
We'd also like to announce that our next open NOH8 photo shoot will be SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 21ST from 12-3PM at our studio in North Hollywood.

DR. DEEPAK CHOPRA PUSHES FOR EQUALITY
November 2nd, 2009 10:39 PM PST
Tomorrow, marriage equality faces obstacles in three states: Maine, Washington, and Michigan. Americans in those three states have the opportunity to take a historical stand for human rights and make sure that everyone in their state is equal under the law. Remember to get out and VOTE! Every single vote makes a difference.
When it comes to every person counting, nobody can put it quite like Dr. Deepak Chopra.
Deepak Chopra is known around the world for his teachings, having written over 55 books that have been translated into 35 different languages, including numerous New York Times bestsellers. Many of Dr. Chopra's books center around spirituality and the mind-body connection, and he frequently appears as a guest on various television shows ranging from CNN to Ellen.
Dr. Chopra invited us to the Chopra Center in San Diego last week so that he too could join the NOH8 Campaign and lend his face - as well as his powerful voice - to the cause. Dr. Chopra is a vocal advocate for gay marriage and was vehemently against Prop 8. He wrote about the hateful proposition and its relation to the "moral hazard" in an article he posted to his blog before elections last year. In the article, Dr. Chopra talks about what can happen when people vote without consequence. You can check out the incredibly thought-provoking article here: Gay Marriage and the Democratic Hazard.
"'Moral hazard' is a phrase more of us know in this era of reckless trading on Wall Street, and now we can apply it to politics. Traders who use other people’s money aren’t exposed to the risk of losing their own money; therefore, they act less responsibly than someone who is fully exposed to the consequences of a risky decision — that’s the moral hazard. In politics, irresponsible behavior happens when there is little or no consequence to be felt, the only difference being that you play with someone else’s life, not merely their money."
Dr. Chopra goes on to say, "In a democracy, majority rule is based on respect for minority rights, the basic idea being that a bond of trust allows minorities to feel safe when they are outnumbered." And he's right! Gay and lesbian couples shouldn't have to live in fear that our rights are going to be taken away, and we shouldn't have to worry about having limitations put on our freedom. It's not right, and we can't continue to live that way. Nobody should.
Deepak Chopra isn't the first of his family to join the campaign. Deepak's son, Gotham Chopra came by the studio a few months ago with his beautiful family to take their stance for marriage equality.
Gotham was joined by his wife Candace and their son Krishan, who proudly posed with an "equality" bracelet.
Take a cue from the Chopra's and find a minute today to meditate about the hundreds of thousands of loving, committed couples in Maine, Washington, and Kalamazoo, Michigan - all of whom are having their relationships defined by the majority vote tomorrow. Send your positive vibes their way - it certainly can't hurt. To those fighting the fight for marriage equality in those states - our thoughts and support are with you!
For everyone voting tomorrow, remember YOUR moral hazard. What if the outcome of the votes defined YOUR life? What about the lives of those YOU care about? Keep those people in your mind - and your hearts - when you're casting your vote tomorrow. Your vote may not have a direct effect on you, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have a very direct, profound, and life-changing effect on your neighbor.

A FAMILY AFFAIR
October 17th, 2009 10:39 PM PST
Christopher Gorham and Anel Lopez Gorham have been married nearly ten years. They’re college sweethearts who both pursued acting careers and even co-starred together years ago on Popular, Ryan Murphy’s hit cult series on the WB. Many of you probably recognize Chris from, among other projects, his recurring role as Henry on Ugly Betty and his most recent starring role on Harper’s Island. Chris and Anel were married in 2000 and began their family together.
Chris and Anel wanted to come in and show their support after they found us on Twitter, so we set it up! The Gorhams brought their whole crew into the studio to pose for their own unique NOH8 Gorham Family Portrait. Chris and Anel were joined by their sons Lucas and Ethan and baby daughter Alondra, who is less than a year old.
"We're really aware that we're lucky to be able to be together, and we want that for everyone else." – Anel Lopez Gorham
The issue of marriage equality is very personal to the Gorhams. “Years ago, Chris and I would never have been allowed to be married legally. I'm Mexican and Chris is white, and if the laws had never been changed to allow people of different races to marry then we never would have been allowed to be married, never been allowed to have this wonderful family, and that's just heartbreaking.. so we really get it."
Only 50 years ago, it was still illegal in most states to marry outside your race. Any relationship between two people of different nationalities – regardless of gender – was viewed as unequal in the eyes of the law. The majority back then decided their personal belief that two races should remain separate, should be passed into law, and apply to everyone (exactly like the narrow majority of California in 2008 decided to eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry just because they didn't personally happen to agree with it)
You know what's interesting about that? The California Supreme Court became the first in the country to strike down its ban on interracial marriage in 1948. That’s when around 95% of the country still opposed the idea of interracial marriage. Removing the ban on interracial marriage wasn’t the “popular” decision by far – but it was the right thing to do, and the California Supreme Court realized that. California set the precedent for the rest of the country when it came to marriage rights, with many states overturning their laws against interracial marriage in the years following. Unfortunately, today's California Supreme Court continues to uphold H8 filled Proposition 8.
Just because the laws against interracial marriages have been repealed, however, doesn't change the fact there are still people out there discriminating against interracial couples. A few weeks ago, a justice for the peace in Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana denied a marriage license to a heterosexual interracial couple. Keith Bardwell, who is white, refused to issue a license to Terence McKay, who is African American, and Beth Humphrey, who is white. Bardwell is an elected official, and openly admits he asks every couple who applies for a license if they’re "mixed." If so, he refuses to marry them and refers them to another justice. You can read more about the story at the Huffington Post
Stories like this remind us that for as far as we've come in the fight for equal human rights, we still have a lot more fighting to do. Alabama still had laws on the books making interracial marriage illegal until 2000, making it the last state to revoke such legislation. In that vote, 40% of Alabama voted to uphold the ban on interracial marriages. Like the fate of the malicious and discriminatory state laws banning interracial marriage, we will go state-by-state repealing the hateful laws preventing same-sex couples from marrying if we have to. There is still so much work to be done, but together we can make this world a better place for everybody.
It's important for us at times like these to remember our history as a country. Many, if not all minorities, have been targeted by the majority at one time or another. When we start regressing back to those dark times in our history when the majority has been allowed to dictate their personal and religious beliefs as law in order to rule the private lives of the minority, the rights of all minorities in this country are in jeopardy.
Check out the Gorham Family's important NOH8 video to see them posing for their family portrait and to hear more about why they posed, how they continue to speak out in their community, and what it was like to be the only family in their neighborhood with a “NO on 8” lawn sign last November.
Speak out. Be HEARD!

THE SISTERS SAY NO TO H8
October 1st, 2009 10:00 PM PST
These aren't your parents' nuns.
The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence brought a completely new look to our campaign this summer, coming together to do what they do best – help bring awareness to gay rights issues!
The Sisters are a world-wide organization famous for their charity work and protests, utilizing a unique combination of drag and Catholic imagery. Their use of bold visuals to make a strong statement against intolerance is definitely something we at the NOH8 Campaign can relate to!
Each Sister has her own theme, of course – but they all donned the notorious duct tape for the cause, each tailoring their custom habits to match the NOH8 Campaign colors. We love their creativity and all the work the Sisters do in the community to speak out and be heard!
The very first to pose for us was the beautiful Sister Roma, who came to us all the way from San Francisco – birthplace of the Sisters – to shoot a special cover for Gloss Magazine. We’re still finding red and white feathers around the studio!
We were also blessed with the presence of an amazing group representing the Los Angeles-based Order of Sisters. You’ll notice that unlike Sister Roma’s coronet (headpiece), the coronets of the LA Sisters resemble “the Hollywood bowl with corners.” Fun Fact: Each Order around the world has their own style of coronet!
As luck would have it, the LA Sisters were joined in the studio by famed film director Chi Chi LaRue, armed with her cherry red megaphone!
Sister Millie Terry and Sister Barbie-Q
Sister Perkie Dot and Sister Tootie Fruit
Sister Erotica Psychotica and Chi Chi LaRue
We’re very grateful to have the support of the Sisters, and hope to work with them again soon!

SUMMER'S END CELEBRATION
September 252th, 2009 10:00 PM PST
With the fall season upon us, we here at the NOH8 Campaign wanted to take a moment and reflect on the busy summer we’ve had. The campaign has continued growing at an exponential rate these past few months, and we’ve been overwhelmed by the support we’ve received from our community.
Support has come from a number of familiar faces from various walks of life, and we’re proud to debut these photos for the very first time here on our site as part of our Summer's End Celebration! We’ll be posting more blogs over the coming days to include more photos of these amazing individuals, so make sure to check back and see who we have in store!
Our first feature is the lovely and elegant actress Debi Mazar. Debi, currently appearing on Dancing With the Stars, proved she is willing to stand up for what she believes in no matter what, posing for marriage equality despite DWTS’s popularity among conservative audiences. She doesn't care what other people think - Debi wants you to know that she supports equal rights!
Debi showed her support for us, so please take a minute to show your support for her! You can keep her dancing on the show by voting “09” at 1-800-VOTE-4-(09), or you can vote online at www.abc.com/dancingwiththestars
Thank you Debi!

DR. DREW - "CAN'T YOU SEE?"
September 12th, 2009 10:00 PM PST
Did you know that Dr. Drew is a huge supporter of same-sex marriage? If not... you do now! The good doctor stopped by our studio recently to show his support for the NOH8 Campaign.
Millions know Dr. Drew Pinsky as host of the nationally syndicated radio call-in program Loveline, a show which has allowed him to help people from all over the country with their problems. Dr. Drew has been a well-respected authority on practical and sensible advice for years, with subjects ranging from relationships to substance abuse and more.
In addition to his traditional NOH8 photo, Dr. Drew also came up with the concept of doing a photo with his eyes covered. The duct tape over his eyes illustrates Prop 8 legislation being blind to logic, reason, and most of all - compassion and understanding. Can't you see?
Dr. Drew took the opportunity while he was here to say some very strong words about the ban on same-sex marriage, including why the passage of Prop 8 made him ashamed to be a Californian.
Hear everything Dr. Drew had to say by checking out the video below!

CUTTING THROUGH RED T8PE
September 2nd, 2009 10:00 PM PST
Gloria Allred, a fearless and fervent civil rights attorney specializing in high-profile cases, invited us to her office recently to shoot her NOH8 portrait.
Allred posed for the NOH8 Campaign in one of her trademark red suits, cutting through symbolic red tape that binds the hands of an actual, committed interracial gay couple.
Gloria has been an absolutely huge vocal advocate for gay rights, and has fought many key public battles on behalf of the gay community. In fact, Ms. Allred represented couple Robin Tyler and Diane Olson in the historic case that led to the California Supreme Court's decision to legalizing gay marriage in May of 2008. She represented the couple again when they filed suit against Proposition 8.
"Our law firm is honored to continue this great civil rights battle for them. We will never give in and we will never give up. We will continue to be the change we wish to see in the world and we will never have another season of silence until same gender couples enjoy the same rights as non-gay couples on this green earth." - Gloria Allred on representing Tyler and Olson in their suit against Prop 8
http://www.amglaw.com/CM/News/GA%20Prop%208%20%20stmnt%2011%205%2008.pdf
Gloria was joined at the shoot by her daughter Lisa Bloom, a fellow lawyer herself who appears regularly on various news network programs and TruTV. Lisa was equally passionate about the cause, making time to meet at her mother's law offices between interviews to turn this NOH8 shoot into a family affair.
We've also put together a short video of the shoot, including a special message from Gloria Allred! Click the video below to play:
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all that you do and have done for our community, Gloria - and thank you for supporting the NOH8 Campaign!
"Ms. Allred is a founding partner of the law firm of Allred, Maroko & Goldberg. Her law firm handles cases involving employment discrimination, including sex, race, age, physical handicap, sexual orientation discrimination, Aids discrimination, sexual harassment and wrongful termination. The firm is also well-known for their work on behalf of victims in civil rights, rape, child sexual abuse and murder cases." - GloriaAllred.com

NOH8-LANTA HOUSEWIFE
September 1st, 2009 2:00 PM PST
Kim Zolciak, star of Bravo's hit series Real Housewives of Atlanta, joins the ranks of singer Debbie Gibson, model Rachel Sterling, and fellow reality star Candace Smith as women who have all chosen to go topless for equality in order to help raise awareness for the NOH8 Campaign.
Kim's campaign portrait makes her support for the cause loud and clear!
"I feel so strongly about gay rights for several reasons, most importantly two of my family members are gay and my Uncle John was personally affected. He was denied rights that all heterosexual Americans are allowed. I believe that regardless of your gender you should be able to choose who your partner is, whether it be same-sex or not. I am all for people being happy. I posed topless to make a LOUD statement to help this wonderful cause. Thank you NOH8 Campaign!" - Kim Zolciak
Thank YOU Kim! We're so appreciative of your support. The NOH8 Campaign welcomes everyone who is willing to stand up against hate and make their voice heard on the issue. We don't judge or discriminate against ANYONE based on their public image, and will continue to support those who support us! We hope all of our supporters will do the same.
Make sure to catch the feature on tonight's THE INSIDER on CBS. Check your local listings!

Michael Emerson Handcuffed for Equality
Saturday, August 29th, 2009
We here at the NOH8 Campaign are big fans of ABC's LOST. Huge, you might say. So you can imagine our excitement when we heard LOST's very own Michael Emerson - who plays the unpredictable, ever-manipulative Benjamin Linus - wanted to get involved in our cause while he was in town!
Mr. Emerson donned a pair of silver hand-cuffs for his photo - symbolizing not only his character's tendency to find himself held captive, but more importantly representing the restraints put on the GLBT community as a direct result of Proposition 8 and similar legislation around the country.
Michael Emerson is the first main character from LOST to join the campaign, but we'd love for his fellow cast members to get in touch with us and join our fight for marriage equality too - so consider this your open invitation! If Benjamin Linus can do it, so can you. J That includes you, Damon and Carlton!
We also want to congratulate Mr. Emerson on the recent news of his third consecutive Emmy Nomination for his portrayal of Ben on the series. Good luck at the Emmys, Michael - we're rooting for you!
Upcoming Event!

Isaiah Washington on Prop H8
Tuesday, August 18th, 2009
This past week, Entertainment Tonight featured a recent photo shoot we had in the studio with actor Isaiah Washington. You can catch the entire ET video by clicking the image below!
Isaiah Washington (Grey's Anatomy) makes his pro-gay marriage stance known in his unique photo. Fellow NOH8er Rachel True (who appears in the "Coming Out" PSA) approached him about the NOH8 Campaign at an NAACP event, and he was in our studio within days!
ET Reporter Kevin Frazier even took a photo after he finished his interview.
While we had the opportunity to speak to Mr. Washington, he pointed out that we should try to represent a larger sampling of the pro-gay marriage and pro-equality African-American community, and we couldn't agree more!
We love the wide range of diversity we've seen so far in the campaign, but we'd really like to feature more members of the African-American community, and minorities in general. We are ALL equal, and we want the NOH8 Campaign to represent EVERYONE out there - so get in touch with us!

Redefining Republican January 20th, 2010 In the year since we've started the NOH8 Campaign, we've often been surprised at some of the different individuals who have approached us showing their support. Few, though, have surprised us more than Cindy McCain - the wife of Senator John McCain and mother to vocal marriage equality advocate Meghan McCain. The McCains are one of the most well-known Republican families in recent history, and for Mrs. McCain to have reached out to us to offer her support truly means a lot. Although we had worked with Meghan McCain before and were aware of her own position, we'd never really thought the cause might be something her mother would get behind. We have a huge amount of respect for both of these women for being brave enough to make it known they support equal marriage rights for all Americans. Aligning yourself with the platform of gay marriage as a Republican still tends to be very stigmatic, but Cindy McCain wanted to participate in the campaign to show people that party doesn't matter - marriage equality isn't a Republican issue any more than it is a Democratic issue. It's about human rights, and everybody being treated equally in the eyes of the law that runs and protects this country. Meghan McCain was asked to be the keynote speaker at next month's National Equality Week at George Washington University for her advocacy. In an odd bit of timing, a student Republican organization has become upset that she'll be giving that speech -- and have publicly voiced their disapproval over the ordeal (you can read more about it here: The group was hoping Meghan would speak under the banner of "Redefining Republican: No Labels, No Boxes, No Stereotypes."
We can't speak for the GWU Republicans, but we at the NOH8 Campaign feel "redefining Republican" is exactly what Cindy and Meghan McCain are doing. They weren't afraid to speak out about what they believe in, and they both made it a priority of theirs to get involved. We can only hope that more politicians will follow the McCains' example. Happy New Year! January 4th, 2010 3:00 PM Wow, who could believe it's 2010 already? We hope all of you enjoyed a great holiday season, and that you were able to spend some time with friends and family! We have been incredibly blessed this year to have gained as much support as we have, and we owe that to all of you for spreading the message of NOH8. YOU are the ones that have made this campaign what it is, and you should all be proud of yourselves. One face at a time, we're helping to make a difference!
Some of the boys from the Real World: Washington, D.C. cast made it their priority to stop over at our studio with only hours left in LA before their flights back home. Mike Manning, Andrew Woods, and Josh Colon each took their own unique portraits before taking their amazing group shot. It was important to each of the boys to use their exposure for the campaign, and we really appreciate them all making it happen! We had so many great shots to choose from - picking just a few was hard

The guys were all incredibly eager to help out in whatever way they could, and each of them grabbed a bunch of NOH8 tattoos to sport out on the town later that night. They weren't sure they'd make it into the studio that night after their taping, so they wrote it on their faces in marker just in case. We made sure to give them the authentic NOH8 treatment when they arrived, of course. Appreciate the effort, boys!
The all new season of The Real World: Washington DC just premiered on MTV earlier this week, so be sure to watch this season. We're told they deal with some pretty interesting and relevant topics to our cause, and we're interested to learn more about the cast who came in to support us. A huge thanks goes out to RW: Brooklyn's JD Ordonez who set the whole thing up for us. He took an incredible shot of his own earlier that day, where he was joined by RW: Hawaii's Ruthie Alcaide.
Ruthie Alcaide
Both Ruthie and JD tour college campuses talking about their experiences on the show and how it's changed their lives. Both have been very vocal about their GLBT background on and off the show, and they each speak a lot about dealing with those issues and more with college students around the country.

As some of you may have noticed, we've been very busy lately. As 2009 closed we celebrated our one year anniversary, which included the pretty shocking engagement of NOH8 Co-Founders Adam Bouska and Jeff Parshley. Those at the NOH8 Anniversary event witnessed this first hand, but fortunately for all of you there's a video on the internet that captures the whole thing! You can check it out here Congratulations boys! Wishing you all the best in the New Year!
We've also been hard at work on a brand new website that we're looking to launch VERY soon. We're really excited to share the new site with you, so look for a brand new noh8campaign.com in the new year. Until then, please bear with us as we work on the transition.
To kick off the new year, we've announced a number of open shoots, which you can find more details about in the EVENTS section of our website! We'll be shooting in West Hollywood, San Diego, and even New York City!
We wish a very happy new year to all, and look forward to renewing our fight for equality in 2010. We have a long way to go, but we've seen the future in each and every one of the people who have supported us and we know it's only a matter of time until we can come together and overturn the hateful and discriminatory marriage legislation we currently have written into our laws all over the country. Make your new years resolution count - talk to as many people as you can about who you are and how you feel. Be heard - NOH8!
