关于暴力袭击国际学生,特别是印度人。
NSW STUDENTS TO PROTEST RACIST VIOLENCE AGAINST INTERNATIONAL
STUDENTS
The Cross-Campus Concessions Coalition has strongly endorsed and agreed to support a rally called
by Indian students in Sydney on Sunday 7th June, to protest violence against international students.
The rally is to assemble at Sydney Town Hall at 12 pm, and will be attended by student organisations
participating in the Cross-Campus Concessions Coalition, as well as representatives of the Federation
of Indian Students Australia (FISA).
“Students have mobilised in Sydney out of a sense of outrage about these attacks. It is our duty to
support them,” said Jacob Carswell-Doherty, president of the University of Western Sydney student
organisation.
“There are a lot of international students in Newcastle who feel like it’s time to stand up and make
our voices heard. It’s only by organising ourselves, getting together, and standing up publicly that our
interests will ever be taken seriously by the government,” said Veronica Meneses, Education and
Welfare Officer for the Newcastle University Student Association.
“International students are sick of feeling afraid and intimidated. We want to speak out now and
show the community that we will not put up with second-class treatment any longer,” said Hessam
Miraghani, International Student Officer for the Sydney University Students’ Representative Council.
“We see not only violence, but all kinds of harassment, discrimination, racism, and intimidation of
international students. The cause is the institutionalised racism of the education and immigration
systems. Some 40 per cent of funding for universities comes from international students’ fees – unis
are making money off an oppressed population,” continued Mr. Mirhaghani.
“We see so much exploitation of international students here. Some in working conditions that could
be described as slave-like. Some students are paying in excess of $200 to stay on a balcony. It’s
disgusting and outrageous. These latest attacks are only the tip of the iceberg. We need to take a
stand,” said Ms. Meneses.
