It was quite an embarrassment for the nation of Spain yesterday when an ad surfaced showing their entire national Olympic basketball team posing in the "Slanty-eyed Asian" position, pulling their eyelids back. We imagine the photo shoot was followed by several minutes of mimed karate moves and Enter The Dragon reenactments, only adding to the awkwardness. So the entire nation of China has been waiting expectantly for an apology. And today they got...outrage that anyone would think Spain is racist! Why, some of their closest friends are from China or somewhere like that!
昨天对于西班牙是一个非常尴尬的时刻，媒体曝光了一个整个西班牙奥运篮球队摆了一个“南亚洲人的眼睛”（种族歧视词语）鬼脸的广告。再加上在此之前的的持续了几分钟的空手道表演和之后的模仿电影『龙争虎斗』的片段，使整个广告更显得怪异无比。全中国因此都在等着西班牙人的道歉，然而今天他们等到的是：西班牙人因为别看成（对亚洲人）种族歧视感到很生气，为什么呢？理由就是他们中有很多人都有亚洲或者中国朋友！

It can't be long now before all of Spain's players are trotting out their close Asian friends before the cameras to tell them about that one time they came over and the Asian guy's old mom made some crazy food from China and the Spanish player totally ate it without batting an eyelash because he's really open to new cultural experiences.

    Spanish newspapers also hit back at suggestions the pictures were racist, saying the team had donated money to charities helping the poor in Africa.

      I can't believe someone seriously thought this would end well. Who's idea was this again? How can you get an entire basketball team to fall for something this retarded? Surely SOMEONE expressed some misgivings. Don't they have publicists or someone paying attention to what they are doing? I admit ignorance when it comes to this topic, so maybe I'm wrong. But, if everyone was paying attention to me, I'd make sure someone was there to help me through all of the decisions, especially those that were made public.

      Yesterday I went to Spanish web sites to gage the reaction from them and the headlines ALONE told the story English Paper Insinuates that Spaniards are Racist and Spanish Basketball Federation Accused of Racism by English Press

      They.Just.Don't.Get.It!
      They think they're the victims here! Honestly.

      And they also made the women's team pose in the same way.

      @GollyG: Nope, it's a Spanish and also a European thing. Western Europe just doesn't get it that their days of lording it over three-quarters of the world are over.

      The Spanish newspaper El Pais has an article that quotes a spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in Spain, who says that embassy does not think the ad is offensive. He also thinks that China would probably not find this offensive. Thanks for justifying this, Chinese Embassy.

      The rest of the article goes on to focus on how the media outside of Spain has blown things out of proportion.

      However , the journalist does note that this kind of bad publicity may hurt Spain's chances for getting elected to host the 2016 Olympics. Now maybe they'll think more deeply about what they just did.

      @Henifer Hropes: @Wrapitup: Okay, I'll take your both your word for it, but the examples given don't exactly demonstrate that it's not a jock problem, by saying it's also a problem with coaches, fans, and sports journalists. (I'm not trying to make a North America - Western Europe comparison. MY experience of jocks is that they are generally ignorant and kind of proud of it, and not very nice, and that it's not a matter of geographic origin but of a sports culture in general.)

      I lived in Spain for about 4 years and recall that, in the aftermath of the Rodney King riots, an Andalucian woman was gleefully disparaging me about how racist Americans are. I responded that an actual discussion of race never takes place in Spain because racism is such an inherent part of the culture. For example, gypsies in Spain have almost zero rights and racism against them is so prevalent that no one really even talks about it. When I brought up the issue of the gypsies, the Spanish woman responded by saying that "gypsies are different because they are always robbing and stealing things."

Not to be outdone by the Spanish national Olympic basketball team, the Spanish women's tennis team pulled the same offensive pose that's apparently sweeping their nation. Ay dios mio!

This racy pic was taken during preparation for their Federation Cup match against China back in April.

The photo still remains on the team's website with the attached caption: "Estamos preparados para China", which translates to, "We are prepared for China." Yeah, preparing for the backlash!

3. All I can say is they are JUST as stupid as the Spanish Basketball Team to think that these gestures are not offensive. Let them come to MY hood and do that and see if they dont get an ASIAN beatdown.... then they won't have to do that cause there eyes will be SWOLEN shut!!!!!!! hehehehehehe......

8. That's quite stupid of them, if they were indeed trying to make fun of the Chinese in that photo. Regardless of what people think of Chinese politics or issues like human rights, Tibet, etc., China does have a very rich mix of traditional and historical cultural qualities that are greatly admired. You have to get past the surface of the daily news to find that though, but the search pays off richly. When thinking of the world's great cultures, I wouldn't think Spain would be in the top 20 but China certainly would be in the top 10 once you subtract the human rights abuses and oh yah, dog meat.

This is much to do about nothing. Those that are most offended by this picture are Americans. OMG!. This is absokutely unbelievable.

Let´s get some things straight:
- Spain is a modern country where evryone has the right to free college education, free medical assistance and where, as opossed to the US, there is virtually no poor people. Furhermore, it´s a contry with more than two thousand years of rich history (do Cervantes, Velazquez, Goya, Picaso, Lorca and a large etc ring a bell?).
- Spain is a power in sports big time: we are the current World Champions in Basketball; European Champions is Soccer (by far, the most popular sport in the world); Nadal is the best tennis player in the world; Alonso is a 2 time F1 world champion; Sastre just won the Tour de France, etc. I have to admit that we are not a power in the olympics though.

There is no doubt that the add was unfortunate. But to call it racist it´s just absurd. You have to understand that in Spain we don't have as many racial issues as you guys do in the US. Believe when I tell you that it was just meant as a nice gesture towards the Chinese people. As I see it, it was rather unfortunate cause it didn´t took into account the foreseeable reaction abroad, but there is no racial side to it whatsoever.

53. Not too long ago Real Sports on HBO did a special on soccer in Spain. Whenever a black player from an opposing team would control the ball or make a goal members of the audience would throw BANANAS on to the field or shout racist remarks. It was horrible. The coach of that soccer team referred to a black player from France as a “Black Sh*t” after he made a righteous goal. He later apologized. They were fascist until like 1975, so what should we expect.

I have a theory regarding this picture: The picture was taken so that it could be used as an advertisement. An advertisement was intended to be used in Spain. What was the purpose of that advertisement? I think it was to remind Spaniards of the Olympics and to get them to take interest and watch. What the single picture was meant to convey was this message “Spanish basketball team in Beijing China for Olympics”. What better why to do that then to show a picture of the team and with a single gesture conjuring “Chinese” to the mind of the viewer? If you were playing charades with a group of friends and you drew “Chinese Fortune Cookie” how would you pantomime it?

I don’t think it is maliciously intended. I think it was simply a clever, albeit insensitive, way to boost viewership for the games.
