TWO Labor backbenchers have said the federal government should mount a constitutional challenge if the Tasmanian Parliament passes a law allowing gay marriage, while Julia Gillard dodged the question.

But if it did become law, the federal government should challenge it. She was not sure the Labor government would do so, although she was confident an Abbott government would. Gay marriage would not be supported if there was a national referendum, Senator Polley said.
Prime Minister Julia Gillard refused to be drawn about the possibility of a federal legal challenge.

Ms Gillard is opposed to gay marriage.
