I was inspired by pinxinge's idea of recording daily life in Australia and feel it's a good way to improve English.

Honestly speaking, I feel my English became worse after landing here. It's a horrifying fact but true. I had expected a lot more chance to use this language and a rapid improvement. In the first few days/weeks, I did talk a lot, introducing myself, asking for basic information which is necessary for daily life, etc. However, as time goes by, I start to realize that I speak less and less every day.

My chat with colleagues is very simple. As I hardly understand what they talked with each other, it's imporssible for me to join in their conversations easily. It might just be a simple joke, or something happened recently in the local community, but I just don't understand! Most of the time, I may know every word they speak but don't know what they're talking about. It's realy frustrating!

I guess this is the bar we have to come across, the culture / background differences. As someone in this forum said, as a new comer in this country, we're like new babies and have a lot to learn, no matter a treet name, a local retailer name or a way of doing things...

Maybe, it's not my English itself but my confidence on my language and communication ability that became less. I feel reluctant to begin a chat, feel clumsy when I try to speak a new word, and always worry about the grammar mistakes in my sentence. Those I never cared so much when I was in China, because I knew anyway people could understand me, or anyway my audience was not native speaker and wouldn't notice the mistakes much.

Here it's different. You can see the surprise on people's face and realize you didn't express it well, maybe with a wrong word or phrase. You can easily notice the mistakes you make and be aware that people are bearing you for them. It's not a good feeling and a reminder of your poor....poor...poor....English.

To speak or not speak? It's a question.

Do you have similar experience or have you resolved the issue already? I'm look forward to your sharing. Thanks.

never mind it too much. remember if you stopped here the misunderstanding/confusion would be kept there forever. an experience is that, whenever you realize they don't quite understand you, try to say " i mean......", "in another words" to explain in another way until you are sure it's understood, then next time you'll know how to express such things better.

Absolutely I will!

The rain is over in Melbourne and feel refreshed as well with the blue sky.

A couple of interesting things today.

A colleague announced her coming baby, which was a great news! Actually I had suspected that when she told me the other day, that she bought a new big house in a suburb, farer away from the office, than where she lives righ now. I thought, well, maybe she planned to raise a family there. But it was still a surprise to me that she's been pregnant for a few months! A guy in the team shocked us in another way. He said he noticed it even a month ago in the Christmas party. It's a shame that he didn't choose to be a detective.

At lunch, I had a good converstaion too, about buying land and building houses. It's nice that someone is willing to share his/her experience / thought with you, isn't it?

Anyway, it's a nice Friday, and wish you all have a nice weekend!

回复 #9 2late 的帖子

another weekend! hopefully, the weather is turnning better.my husband is still working, don't know where the supper lies.
there are several jokes about culture difference in my own experience. The first month i came here,a local friend invited me to visit her house. when we  were driving,i asked her a question just  to kill the silence in the car.
the question was about household income of a so-called middle-class family in mel.I thought it was a quite social topic ,but the results turned out to be rather embarrasing.  my friend simplely  answered : i don't know about this.  ,then i realised it was about privacy.

the other joke i made was much more naiver. The same friend owned a pharmacy business in mel. when we talked about this,i don't know why blurt out "drug store"
sounds so silly.

A boy told me his experience in language school, he said the only thing he was asked to do there is to read the english book loudly and correctly. And the key is CORRECTLY.

Good morning! A new week starts.

It's cloudy and a bit cold in Melbourne. It reminds me of words in a Carpenter's old song "rainning days and Mondays always make me down!". I'm thankful that it's not both rainning and Monday. Good luck to you all!

your signature is interesting: 从今天起开始灌水,洗脚,上田,扭秧歌。

a bit curious, what's the meaning of "上田”? why “洗脚”?

As he said, the key is CORRECTLY, if it is just a novel, how can I garrantee the pronunciation is correct?
So, it sounds easy but acturally it is not, without teacher's help.

I know there is one way you can do it yourself. The library here has audio books you can borrow. With it, you will have a model to follow and I'm sure the native narrator can read it CORRECTLY.
