Kerryn Phelps disappointed at Kevin Rudd for voting against same-sex marriage
A 'BETRAYED' Kerryn Phelps will write to former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to express her disappointment that he voted against same-sex marriage today after telling her he would 'fix' it.
Professor Phelps is the former head of the Australian Medical Association and a prominent same-sex marriage advocate.
She said Mr Rudd approached her and her partner Jackie Stricker at a cocktail party in December last year.
"We were in the bar waiting for the function (an ALP conference Fringe Event on marriage equality) to start and Kevin Rudd walks in and walks over, starts chatting, and the subject came up," she said.
"He said you know if I was still the PM it would be a done deal."
Prof Phelps said they were definitely talking about same-sex marriage. Mr Rudd's office says he was talking about civil unions.
Prof Phelps said they were surprised at what she understood as his support for same-sex marriage, but he said he'd moved a long way and they believed him.
Then, today, Mr Rudd voted against legislation that would allow same-sex couples to marry.
"I feel betrayed. I feel like if I have a discussion with somebody, I don't care who they are, he had the option to say 'I'll vote as I see fit'. It was, as I said, a group conversation," Prof Phelps said.
"He had no reason to have the conversation, or to say anything about it.
"I'll be writing to him for sure. I've been making a few phone calls. I'll just tell him of my deep disappointment at the way he voted today. I'd like to ask him for his justification and whether he changed his mind between December and now, and why. There'd be a lot of people in the community, our friends, families and supporters who'd be deeply disappointed. "
A spokesman for Mr Rudd said his position on same sex-marriage has not changed, that he did not intend to comment in detail on multiple private conversations, and that he was talking to Prof Phelps about civil unions. He said:
"The commitment Mr Rudd made at the 2009 ALP National Conference, as has already been reported at the time, was to seek a mandate on civil unions at the 2010 election in order to facilitate an open parliamentary vote and/or plebiscite on the matter," he said.
"This position of support for civil unions (as exists in British Law today) was the basis of Mr Rudd's conversation with Kerryn."
The spokesman also said Mr Rudd had asserted last year that he was repulsed by homophobic remarks made during the broader debate, and respects long-term supporters of same-sex marriage. |
