Bully

Thanks to The Community Brave Foundation I had the chance to watch the confronting new documentary on schoolyard bullying aptly named, Bully.
I’d like to share a story about my experience with high school bullying.
When I was 15 I was bullied relentlessly by my peers at an all boys high school in Sydney’s East.
I was pushed, shoved, threatened constantly and even had a fire extinguisher blown in my face. These kids were animals.
They were bullying me because I looked different.
Mopish hair and a different taste in music, pretty superficial stuff normally but extremely good reasons to bully someone when you’re a kid.
Teachers gave bad kids the usual punishments: detentions, standing outside etc.
But once my sexuality became the talk of the school things turned ugly.
I turned to my teachers for help but instead of students being punished I was constantly sent to the principal’s office.
The principal told me that I was the problem. That I made myself a target and that I invited this sort of behavior.
The only solution he could think of was hiding my sexuality and conforming to their standards.
I left the school confused and angry and never returned.
Thankfully, this made me strong and I’ve been able to heal over time. Unfortunately, not every kid is capable of doing so.
That ‘principal’ should be ashamed of himself and I hope he is. He didn’t just let bullying thrive, he engaged in it.
If you or someone you know is being bullied, try to reach out to someone you trust.
