Unit 1 - Starting Something New - Part 3 (Reading)

I though I'd give you a buzz
and see how you are getting on in your new job.
I'm going great guns now thanks.
I had a few hassles at first
but now I've got the hang of it.
I thought the job was beyond me.
I couldn't make head nor tail of the accounts system.
but I stuck at it
and I'm getting into the swing of things now.
Good for you!
Thanks. What've you been up to anyway?
I should take a page out of your book.
I have the faintest idea about computers.
I mean what if everyone else in the class catches on quicker than me.
I'm getting a bit old to learn new tricks.
You can't teach an old dog new tricks.
Oh, come off it!
Heaps of people study as adults these days.
Everyone in the class will be in the same boat.
Go on Chris!
You've talked me into it.
Catch you later.
Hooroo... and good luck!
Boo on you!
Good on you!

An Overview of Pronunciation in English

Linking

Many Asian speakers normally use only the top part of their lungs while speaking, and will expel air in pulses, thus producing the choppy or staccato sound-effect in their accent.
亚洲人说英文的时候,比较容易断开词和词之间的连接,一字一顿。

English speakers breathe from deep in the diaphragm and expel the air in a steady stream while speaking, thus allowing for linking to take place.
英语母语的人比较注意深度呼吸,长而稳定的气流,注重连词。

How-are-you?
What-are-you-doing-on Saturday-night-and-after-that-and-after-that-....?

Networking
在中国靠关系,在澳洲显然关系更重要,而且更加明朗化
同事之间的闲谈被视为正当需要,闲谈是交流和沟通的一个重要手段。

colloquialisms = slangs

sending up, taking the mickety = 那某人开玩笑

hehe, Xblue, seems Pre-skillmax really works for you.
I have been studying Skillmax for about 2 weeks. To tell the truth, it is not so effective as I expected. The job market now is tough. You are right that the best way to find a job is to look after your network, here or even in China. I am trying, very hard.
