Dear Sir or Madam
My name is Jiajie Lu from Creative Industries Faculty at Queensland University of Technology. I am working on my PhD project that focuses on the identity of Chinese diaspora and their media usage in Australia. In this research, the term “diaspora” refers to a group of people who are physically away from their country of origin but who still maintain sentimental, social and material connections with their homelands.
To help me in this study, I am seeking to interview adult Chinese people living in Australia, but who were born in Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan or Macau areas. You can be an Australian citizen, permanent resident or international student who has been in Australia for at least 12 months. In terms of language proficiency, you must be able to read and speak both English and Chinese (either Mandarin or Cantonese). Moreover, you must have access to at least one computer with Internet and one smartphone, and must use the Internet and social apps (such as Facebook, Twitter, Wechat or Weibo) on your smartphone at least once a week.
In this project, you will be required to take part in a semi-structured interview lasting about 30-45 minutes. During the interviews, you may be asked to describe your routine media usage, sense of identity, social engagement and your connections maintained by social media. Interviews will be recorded on a digital voice recorder for the purpose of further analysis and data backup. In addition to the interviews, you can choose to add the researcher as a contact in Facebook, Twitter, Wechat or Weibo. During interviews, the researcher will provide a laptop computer with a screen capture software application. You can choose to demonstrate your social media usage and show your posts on social media platforms via this laptop, which will be recorded for further analysis and data backup. There is no requirement for you to do this screen-captured demonstration. You can take part in semi-structured interviews only and refuse to demonstrate your social media usage.
All data collected by digital voice recorder and screen capture software (if applicable) will be destroyed within 6 months after the related transcriptions are finished. You can quit this project anytime without comment or penalty. Once you quit, all data relating to you will be eliminated.
Please view the attached Participant Information Sheet and Consent Form for further details on the study.
Should you wish to participate or have any questions, please contact me via email.
Please note that this study has been approved by the QUT Human Research Ethics Committee (approval number 1500000226).
Many thanks for considering this request.
