A mass illegal wedding, marches, rallies and a handing over of a major petition are planned for this Saturday as the marriage equality campaign heightens.

It’s all to mark the eighth anniversary of the day John Howard changed the Marriage Act to ensure same-sex couples would not be included.

There will be rallies starting from 1pm in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Hobart, Canberra and Newcastle.

In Melbourne, protesters will meet at the Victorian State Library from 1pm for a huge rally in support of Marriage Equality, and will then march through the streets, hitting the Old Treasury Building for a mass illegal wedding ceremony.

Brisbane’s marriage equality event will include a BBQ, face painting, stalls and speakers at Queens Park.

The latest nationwide day of action comes as advocates are buoyed by the Tasmanian Premier’s promise to grant equal marriage rights in that state. Meanwhile, a new poll reveals support for marriage equality among Australian voters is now at 64%.

“But with Gillard and Abbott still digging their heels in we will not be taking anything for granted,” says Sydney rally promoter Cat Rose. “We intend this Saturday to show those in parliament that the determination of the campaign has not gone away and that there is only one way for this issue to be resolved – with equal rights.”

Fellow protest organizer Bryn Hutchinson adds: “The pressure is mounting on all sides for Gillard and the Federal Labor government. It is an exciting time, and now more than ever people need to show their support for marriage equality by contacting their parliamentarians and joining us at this Saturday’s rally for equality.
