Don’t Eat this fish: Pangas (Pangasius, Vietnamese River Cobbler, White Catfish, Gray Sole)

  Cheap cheap fish! The above is an ad (from one of the large supermarket chains in France) for the fish known as Pangas (also called, Pangasius, Vietnamese River Cobbler, Basa Fish and White Catfish, Tra, Gray Sole). It was a reminder to tell you about the dangers of this strange but increasingly popular fish. I learned about them and how they’re raised a while ago on an informative documentary online here: Documentary about Pangas. (which is in French. If you don’t speak French, read below.)
  
  Would the French call it Poisson ou poison?
  
  Industrially farmed in Vietnam along the Mekong River, Pangas or whatever they’re calling it, has only been recently introduced to the French market. However, in a very short amount of time, it has grown in popularity in France. The French are slurping up Pangas like it’s their last meal of soup noodles. They are very, very affordable (cheap), are sold in filets with no bones and they have a neutral (bland) flavor and texture; many would compare it to cod and sole, only much cheaper. But as tasty as some people may find it, there’s, in fact, something hugely unsavory about it. I hope the information provided here will serve as very important information for you and your future choices. Here’s why I think it is better left in the shops (and not on your dinner plates):

  1. Pangas are teeming with high levels of poisons and bacteria. (industrial effluents, arsenic, and toxic and hazardous by-products of the growing industrial sector, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), DDT and its metabolites (DDTs), metal contaminants, chlordane-related compounds (CHLs), hexachlorocyclohexane isomers (HCHs), and hexachlorobenzene (HCB)). The reasons are that the Mekong River is one of the most polluted rivers on the planet and this is where pangas are farmed and industries along the river dump chemicals and industrial waste directly into it. To Note: a friend lab tests these fish and tells us to avoid eating them due to high amounts of contamination. Regardless of the reports and recommendations against selling them, the supermarkets still sell them to the general public knowing they are contaminated.
  
  2. They freeze Pangas in contaminated river water. Ew.

  3. Pangas are not environmentally sustainable, a most unsustainable food you could possibly eat - “Buy local” means creating the least amount of environmental harm as possible. This is the very opposite end of the spectrum of sustainable consumerism. Pangas are raised in Vietnam. Pangas are fed food that comes from Peru (more on that below), their hormones (which are injected into the female Pangas) come from China. (More about that below) and finally, they are transported from Vietnam to France. That’s not just a giant carbon foot print, that’s a carbon continent of a foot print.
  
  4. There’s nothing natural about Pangas - They’re fed dead fish remnants and bones, dried and ground into a flour, from South America, manioc (cassava) and residue from soy and grains. This kind of nourishment doesn’t even remotely resemble what they eat in nature. But what it does resemble is the method of feeding mad cows (cows were fed cows, remember?) What they feed pangas is completely unregulated so there are most likely other dangerous substances and hormones thrown into the mix. The pangas grow at a speed light (practically!): 4 times faster than in nature…so it makes you wonder what exactly is in their food? Your guess is as good as mine.

  5. Pangas are Injected with Hormones Derived from Urine - I don’t know how someone came up with this one out but they’ve discovered that if they inject female Pangas with hormones made from the dehydrated urine of pregnant women, the female Pangas grow much quicker and produce eggs faster (one Panga can lay approximately 500,000 eggs at one time). Essentially, they’re injecting fish with hormones (they come all of the way from a pharmaceutical company in China) to speed up the process of growth and reproduction. That isn’t good. Some of you might not mind eating fish injected with dehydrated pee so if you don’t good for you, but just consider the rest of the reasons to NOT eat it.
  
  6. You get what you pay for - and then some. Don’t be lured in by insanely cheap price of Pangas. Is it worth risking your health and the health of your family?
  
  7. Buying Pangas supports unscrupulous, greedy evil corporations and food conglomerates that don’t care about the health and well-being of human beings. They only are concerned about selling as many pangas as possible to unsuspecting consumers. These corporations only care about selling and making more money at whatever cost to the public.8. Pangas will make you sick - If (for reasons in #1 above) you don’t get immediately ill with vomiting, diarrhea and effects from severe food poisoning, congratulations, you have an iron stomach! But you’re still ingesting POISON not poisson.Final important note: Because of the prodigious amount of availability of Pangas, be warned that they will certainly find their way into other foods: surimi (those pressed fish things, imitation crab sticks), fish sticks, fish terrines, and probably in some pet foods. (Warn your dogs and cats and hamsters and gerbils and even your pet fish!)

美味河鲜竟是毒鱼?

网上盛传,两种能在本地吃到的河鲜,竟然是在生长在其毒无比、严重污染的水里,吃了影响健康。

第一个传言来自法国,指一种鄂骨鱼(Pangas Fish)最近从越南引进那里,卖得很便宜,但其实有毒。  

这类又名Basa Fish或Pacific Dory的鲟鱼类,生长在淡水河里,有出口到许多国家,被许多餐馆当成是主要的鱼类佳肴。  

传言引述一个法文短片,言之凿凿地列举4大理由解释为什么这种鱼有毒:  

一,它生长在越南的湄公河,那里污染严重,很多人把工业垃圾直接往里面倒;  

二,它在受污染的河水里直接冷冻储藏;  

三,雌性鱼被注射从孕妇尿液里提取的荷尔蒙,让其更快产卵;  

四,人们用死鱼来饲养它。 

传言中还说,这种鱼很便宜,以致人们贪图它的价钱而往往不顾自己的健康。

第二个传言的矛头则是指向一种别名叫迷你龙虾的甲壳类,通常可以配辣椒炒来吃。 

这则传言声称小龙虾专门生长在污水里,而且是越肮脏它就长得越肥。  

“它的肺里都是虫子,它的肉都是有毒金属,可是无良商家还是能把它搞来卖。” 

有人还在网上声称,吃了这种小龙虾可能会肺部发炎。
农粮局:本地越南海鲜 都没有问题

农粮局受询时表示:本地从越南入口的海鲜,都可安全食用。

农粮局受询时向本报透露,每一批进口新加坡的食品都经过严格检验,以确保不含有危害人体的成分,例如致病菌、抗生素、增长剂、激素,农药残留,化学添加剂和污染物等。同时,该局也有一直密切留意全球粮食安全状况,以查明和监测那是否会影响到本地的情况。 

因此,获准在本地市场上售卖的越南海鲜,绝对可以安全食用。  

而数据显示,本地去年总共从越南进口了1万4804公吨的鱼类。
网上流传,鄂骨鱼生长在极度污染的水里。

有关这两种毒鱼的传言在网上炒得沸沸洋洋,更令人关注的是,网友都声称这两种鱼在新加坡买得到。  

有网友说,鄂骨鱼就是我们所谓的多利鱼,在本地餐馆通常是用来做炸鱼柳,在超市也有得卖。 

至于小龙虾,许多网友都表示在本地的许多自助餐馆都有吃过,不过他不敢吃。
西餐厅老板:从没顾客投诉

网友盛传,鄂骨鱼(Pangas Fish)其实就是太平洋海鲂(Pacific Dory),俗称多利鱼,在西餐中非常普遍,不过小龙虾则比较罕见。  

记者今早联络上多家中餐和西餐馆,发现多利鱼多用于西餐馆,炸鱼柳主来自多利鱼。

Curry San西餐厅董事冯家骏(33岁)告诉本报,他餐厅里卖的多利鱼来自泰国,一盘西餐的价格介于7元至8元间。  

“我从未听过这种传言,相信是网友乱传的。而且,进口的都经过农粮局的审查,绝对安全。我们的顾客对于多利鱼也从未有过什么不良的投诉。”

华人超市卖的龙利鱼柳(basa fillet)是从中国和越南进口的,CFIA抽查43%不合格,遭受过洗涤剂污染,进入市场的也难保没问题,最好别买。它们在美国是禁售的,加拿大也快了.

你怎莫知道它的别名叫basa fish?

我就觉得华人超市里的很多东西,其实根本没有通过检查检疫,老外哪里知道那些是什莫东西啊,再说这里缺人,有多少资源会在关注华人饮食安全的问题上呢!
以前有看到过在华人店工作的学生说的,06年的冷冻羊肉卷拿出来贴上新标签还能买几年。所以在这里买华人店的东西比在中国更不安全。悲哀一个。

这鱼也不见得是真的。别的不说

三,雌性鱼被注射从孕妇尿液里提取的荷尔蒙,让其更快产卵;

这一条,你不觉得很sb么?到哪里去找这么多孕妇收集尿液啊?

难道是因为这个原因特价?
coles的不会也没有经过检验吧?

小龙虾就是虾蛄,在国内就知道是污染的东西。信不信自己判断了,我也不是业内人士。

挺早的时候,就是在澳洲电视台中播过关于BASA的片子,就是说这种鱼出产于非常脏的河里,河周围死鱼死猫很多。 看得吓死了,从此不敢买了。

如果真是湄公河出产的鱼就白送也不吃了,我在湄公河旅行的几天基本没吃过什么主食,也不敢喝茶水,不为什么,只因为实在是脏!看到当地人还在里面淘米、洗菜和肉,赤身在河里捕鱼,生活污水直接又排到河里,WC里准备给客人洗手用的河水不洗还好,洗过了的手臭哄哄的,只能又用矿泉水再洗一遍,如此环境之下真的没有任何食欲可言。

为什么澳洲政府进口食品也不把把关呢?

吃它也不光是便宜的原因,更主要是用它来做酸菜鱼或水煮鱼貌似是最适合的品种了,试过用比它贵的鱼柳,吃起来确实没用它做的理想。

需要什么鱼?味道重的还的淡的?

可以关注一下的,一般COLES或WOOLWORTH里,就是BASA一直便宜。起初我和老婆还买了自己吃做给小孩吃,后来老外朋友说有污染才知道。

试一下deep sea perch,不要买那种速冻的。价钱不便宜,现在要30多刀,而且也不是常有货

不用担心啦.河鲜当然没有海鲜那么养啦.都吃粪便的啦.有机蔬菜也一样的.以前鱼塘里的鱼都吃粪便大的.现在吃饲料才大问题呢.海鲜深海的也有毒.而且贵很多.什么东西都是不要吃太多,就不会有事拉.

现在超市和鱼店的鱼虾基本都有标明产地,澳洲的当然贵很多,不过还是放心点

Correct Information About Basa


What Is Basa?

Basa is a fresh water fish, farmed mainly in the Mekong River system of Vietnam. It is one the world's most successful aquaculture species - and is rapidly becoming one of the most popular fish in Europe, north America - and Australia.

These fast growing fish produce large white fillets with no bones, flesh that is moist with a light firm texture, and a mild fish flavour - exactly the combination preferred by most Australians. This makes Basa one of the most versatile species we have: ideal for restaurant or take-away meals, but equally suitable as a table fish to cook at home using a multitude of recipes and cooking styles.

Basa is often presented in retail outlets already prepared in a variety of flavoured marinades, ready to cook and eat within minutes.

The name Basa was chosen by the Australian Fish Names Committee as the approved Standard marketing Australian name. It is derived from the local (Vietnamese) word for the species. Names such as Pacific Dory or Catfish are incorrect.

What Are The Growing Conditions For Basa?

Basa are grown in one of the most suitable environments for fish farming found anywhere in the world. The Mekong River (from which drains much of the Himalayan snow melt) has one of the largest consistent flows of fresh, clean water on the planet. Australian environmental scientists working for the Mekong River Commission, which monitors water quality at over 50 sites, confirm that testing over the past 15 years shows no serious contamination of the river - partly because there is little industry in its catchment, and partly because of its large flow. It is one of the cleanest of the world's large rivers. Claims that the Mekong River is seriously contaminated have been overwhelmingly refuted by those Australian scientists working in the region.

How Safe Is Basa?

Behind Vietnam's farmed fish export trade is a modern, multi-billion dollar industry that applies the highest levels of global science and technology in the entire chain of its safe food production - essential to enable it to compete in highly regulated and fastidious western markets. The processing factories that produce fish for export to Australia are at the cutting edge of modern technology and are accredited to the highest levels of international food safety.

In addition, the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) service rigorously tests all arriving shipments of fish for a range of potential contaminants, prior to release. This multi-tier food safety system ensures consumers have no need to be concerned about product quality or food safety - and this is frequently confirmed by Australia's highest food safety authority: Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ).

Why Do We Need To Import Basa?

Australia's demand for seafood currently exceeds, by about double, the production capacity of our wild catch fisheries and our aquaculture industries. This is because Australia's wild fish resources have reached (and currently exceed) sustainable levels, and because our aquaculture industries are still in their infancy. modest component of seafood in their diet. This is not a new development - Australia has been importing much of its seafood for over 50 years.

As Australia's population grows, our reliance on imports will also grow. It's lucky that we have access to aquaculture species such as Basa, which not only provide a healthy and affordable replacement, but are sustainable in the long term - protecting Australia's (and the world's) wild fish stocks from depletion.

As a result, we need to import more than half of our annual requirement to enable all Australians to maintain even a modest component of fish in their diet.

Why Is Basa So Cheap?

Basa are very fast growing fish - so the cost of raising them is far less than for many other farmed species. When ready, Basa are easily harvested, and most farms are located inshore - close to processing factories. So there is no need to maintain large fishing fleets whose costs have been driven up in recent years by rising fuel prices, enormous license and quota fees, and the need to travel vast distances of ocean to find fewer and fewer fish. That's why aquaculure is so important to the world's future sustainable fish supply.

Is Basa A Healthy Choice Meal

Like most fish, Basa is high protein and low fat. These 'good' fats contain Omega-3. The regular consumption of fish (2 or 3 meals a week) is linked to significantly reduced risk of heart disease, stroke, bowel cancer and the prevention or mitigation of numerous other life threatening or debilitating illnesses. It is now well established that, in general, people who eat fish regularly, live longer and healthier lives.

The Heart Foundation recommends eating fish twice a week, and Basa is a great choice to fulfil this requirement.

Don't Believe Everything You Hear on TV

In early 2006, Channel 7's Today Tonight ran two programs depicting appalling growing conditions for aquaculture fish in Vietnam. The footage showed small 'cottage industry' farms growing fish for local consumption, focussing on polluted waterways and drains in urban areas. This is NOT where Basa, sold in Australia, is grown.

Although the reporter stated "this is where your fish and chips comes from", the footage did not represent the region's ultra-modern, multi-billion dollar Basa export industry. Even Food Standards Australia New Zealand described the information in the Today Tonight reports as "unreliable". The ABC's Media Watch has a special section on its website dedicated to misleading reports by the same Today Tonight reporter, titled The 'Sluggo' Files. It's worth a look!
