Donny 在北京学中文。他的中国朋友要是遇到了不知道用美语怎么说的词，就会来请教他。今天是杨林要问的：忙。

Donny：Hi 杨琳，what's up? I haven't seen you in ages.

YL: 别提了，我最近特别忙，I am really busy! 忙得四脚朝天，怎么说...four feet up!

Donny: four feet up? I can imagine. But in English, we don't say that....You can say I'm up to my neck in work.

YL: I'm up to my neck... in work ? 工作太多，堆到和脖子一样高？被工作压得喘不过气来。这个说法太形象了! 还有别的吗？

Donny: There is another expression that also has to do with body parts. It is "I've got my hands full".

YL: I've got my hands full。我明白了，就是说两手都没闲着。

Donny: Exactly. Oh, I just thought of another one---"I have a lot on my plate".

YL: I have a lot on my plate? plate, p-l-a-t-e, plate 不是盘子么？说盘子里有很多东西，那一定是...忙着吃呢吧？

Donny:That's possible! Anyway, when you say you have a lot on your plate, it means you're busy.

YL: 我知道了。哎呀，我快迟到了，快，再教最后一个。

Donny: Okay, this one will be easier to remember-- I've got a million things to do!

YL: 太夸张了吧! I've got a million things to do! 有一百万件事情等着我去做。

Donny: Right! Now, Yang Lin, tell me what you've learned today!

YL: 今天学到的还真不少。形容特别忙可以说，I'm up to my neck in work，工作堆到脖子了；I've got my hands full, 两手都占着呢；I have a lot on my plate，盘子里堆得满满的。哎呀! 我得赶紧走人了，I've got a million things to do!

Donny: Hey, Fang Fang, what's up? Do you like your new job?

FF: 啊，还行吧。就是初来乍到，专业一点都用不上，尽打杂了。

Donny: 打杂？What do you do everyday?

FF: 无非就是复印文件，取东西，接电话什么的。哎？美国人怎么形容这种工作啊？

Donny: Oh! Someone who does small and unimportant tasks at work is called a go-for. g-o-f-o-r, go-for.

FF: 哦! 这么说，go-for 就是公司里的小弟小妹! go-for 的主要工作就是跑腿儿。那“跑腿”又怎么说呢？

Donny: We say they "run errands for others." Run is spelled r-u-n, errands is spelled e-r-r-a-n-d-s. The word "errand" means a short trip that's taken to finish a necessary task.

FF: Errand 差事，复数加s, errands, 所以 run errands for others 就是替别人“跑腿”的意思。

Donny: That's right. I guess you don't really like running errands for your boss, right?

FF: 是啊，我想做有意义的工作，可老板总让我干些没用的活儿。

Donny: She gives you a lot of busy work, I'm assuming? The phrase "busy work" refers to tasks that keep people busy but are not very useful.

FF: 哦! 原来，busy work 就是花时间，但没意义的工作。老板给我 busy work，并不是因为这些工作重要，而是因为她不愿意看我闲着!

Donny: That's right! Fangfang, a lot of people start as go-fors and work their way up. I'm sure you'll do just fine. Now let's see what you've learned today!

消磨时间，但是没意义的工作是 busy work.

今年有个搞BOXING TENT 的SHOWMAN获得THE ORDER OF AUSTRALIA 奖章，奖励他for his service to entertainment and to the Birdsville community.

It's the last frontier and I get great enjoyment to see people out there that come from the city and a lot of them have never been there before and they bring the whole family out and they say, well you know, we didn't really know it was like this out here and I said well it is, you know, because people out here, I mean there's nothing wrong with the people in the city either but the people out here will help you and everyone is happy to see other people because there's not as many people to talk to I suppose.

The twisted bodies lay on the floor of Moscow's busiest airport early this morning, still tightly bundled in their heavy winter parkas and fur hats, after a suicide bomber blew himself up, killing 35 and wounding more than 100.

White smoke rolled through the international arrivals hall at Domodedovo airport in suffocating clouds as attendants were seen pushing luggage carts in apparent numb shock.

"I was 10m away from the explosion. Suddenly there was a flash and then very thick smoke appeared. Everyone panicked because we feared that there would be a second explosion," eyewitness Artyom Zhilenkov told AFP, still covered in the blood of victims.

He said many of the victims appeared to be taxi drivers who gather outside the arrivals hall.

Any Australians unable to contact family or friends in the area have been advised to contact the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade on 1300 555 135.

Police and ambulance sirens screamed and security officials cleared the street for the impending arrival of top ministers and officials.

"Doctors are complaining that people are dying in ambulances," a law enforcement official told the Lifenews website. "In the confusion, someone sent a corpse with a skull blown in half to a hospital in Vidnoye."

But the scene inside the airport seemed surreally normal.

The light remained on as security men and attendants wondered in between the tightly-packed bodies. They carried on quiet conversations and pocked flashlights in the victims' faces to see better through the heavy smoke.

But Moscow radio stations flooded with witness accounts describing scenes of mayhem at which the initial survivors had little hope of receiving any medical help.

"They had such a tiny first aid station, it was horrific," a man who identified himself as Pavel told City FM radio.

"I went up to a woman, she was blinking her eyes. I saw that she was in a very bad state. But then I tried to help a man get out. And when I turned around, she was already gone."

Other witnesses said the blast wave also tore through a series of small cafes and tables that line one of the arrival hall's walls.

"A small girl had a torn wound on her right leg. They tried to tie her up with a bandage but there was no doctor," another witness named Sergei told the station.

"No one knew what to do. Then someone said that we had to get out, and people just ran."

Fyodor meanwhile said his plane had just arrived from Berlin when the captain reported that there was trouble at the airport.

The passengers were kept on board the plane for an extra hour but then led through the regular arrivals procedure — which included going through customs control.

But most of the callers and other witnesses said they were currently overwhelmed by mixed emotions of relief at being alive and grief at having witnessed such senseless devastation.

"Suddenly the explosion happened. Me and my colleague were thrown against the wall, we were hit hard. We were only saved by the fact that there were a lot of people around us," a rental company worker named Alexei Spiridonov told LifeNews.

"We jumped up and tried to help wounded. Body parts lay around, there was blood everywhere. It was an awful picture."

The last major explosions tore through two Moscow subway trains during a regular Moscow morning rush hour in March. Those blasts killed 40 people and were claimed by rebels from the predominantly Muslim republic of Chechnya.

This one hit Domodedovo — the pride of Moscow that was supposed to greet tens of thousands of foreign guests for the 2014 Winter Olympics and the 2018 Football World Cup.

One of the great ironies revealed by the global recession that began in 2008 is that Communist Party-ruled China may be doing a better job managing capitalism's crisis than the democratically elected U.S. government. Beijing's stimulus spending was larger, infinitely more effective at overcoming the slowdown, and directed at laying the infrastructural tracks for further economic expansion.

As Western democracies shuffle wheezily forward, China's economy roars along at a steady clip, having lifted some half a billion people out of poverty over the past three decades and rapidly creating the world's largest middle class to provide an engine for long-term domestic consumer demand. Sure, there's massive social inequality, but there always is in a capitalist system. (Income inequality rates in the U.S. are some of the worst in the industrialized world, and here more people are falling into poverty than are being raised out of it — the 43 million Americans officially designated as living in poverty in 2009 was the highest number in the 51 years that records have been kept.) (See TIME's photoessay "The Rise of Hu Jintao.")

Beijing is also doing a far more effective job than Washington is of tooling its economy to meet future challenges — at least according to historian Francis Fukuyama, erstwhile neoconservative intellectual heavyweight. "resident Hu Jintao's rare state visit to Washington this week comes at a time when many Chinese see their weathering of the financial crisis as a vindication of their own system, and the beginning of an era in which U.S.-style liberal ideas will no longer be dominant," wrote Fukukyama in Tuesday's Financial Times under a headline stating that the U.S. had nothing to teach China. "State-owned enterprises are back in vogue, and were the chosen mechanism through which Beijing administered its massive stimulus."

Chinese leaders are more inclined today to scold the U.S. — its debtor to the tune of close to a trillion dollars — than to emulate it, and Fukuyama notes that polls show a larger percentage of Chinese people believing their country is headed in the right direction compared to Americans. China's success in navigating the economic crisis, says Fukuyama, was based on the ability of its authoritarian political system to "make large, complex decisions quickly, and ... make them relatively well, at least in economic policy."

These are startling observations from a writer who, 19 years ago, famously proclaimed that the collapse of the Soviet Union heralded "the end of history as such... That is, the end point of mankind's ideological evolution and the universalization of Western liberal democracy as the final form of human government." (See "TimeFrames: An Eye on China, Old and New.")

Fukuyama has had the good grace and intellectual honesty to admit he was wrong. And he's no apologist for Chinese authoritarianism, calling out its abuses and corruption, and making clear that he believes the absence of democracy will eventually hobble China's progress. Still, he notes, while they don't hold elections, China's Communist leaders are nonetheless responsive to public opinion. (Of course they are! A Party brought to power by a peasant rebellion knows full well the destructive potential of the rage of working people.) But the regime claims solid support from the Chinese middle class, and hedges against social explosion by directing resources and investment to more marginal parts of the country.

China's leaders, of course, never subscribed to Fukuyama's "end of history" maxim; the Marxism on which they were reared would have taught them that there is no contingent relationship between capitalism and democracy, and they only had to look at neighbors such as Taiwan, South Korea and Singapore to see economic success stories under authoritarian rule — although the prosperity thus achieved played a major role in transforming Taiwan and South Korea into the noisy democracies they are today. Nor were Beijing's leaders under any illusions that the free market could take care of such basic needs as education, health care and infrastructure necessary to keep the system as a whole growing.
But Fukuyama is also making a point about the comparative inability of the U.S. system to respond decisively to a long-term crisis. "China adapts quickly, making difficult decisions and implementing them effectively," Fukuyama writes. "Americans pride themselves on constitutional checks and balances, based on a political culture that distrusts centralised government. This system has ensured individual liberty and a vibrant private sector, but it has now become polarised and ideologically rigid. At present it shows little appetite for dealing with the long-term fiscal challenges the U.S. faces. Democracy in America may have an inherent legitimacy that the Chinese system lacks, but it will not be much of a model to anyone if the government is divided against itself and cannot govern." Money has emerged as the electoral trump card in the U.S. political system, and corporations have a Supreme Court-recognized right to use their considerable financial muscle to promote candidates and policies favorable to their business operations and to resist policies and shut out candidates deemed inimical to their business interests. So, whether it's health reform or the stimulus package, the power of special interests in the U.S. system invariably produces either gridlock, or mish-mash legislation crafted to please the narrow interests of a variety of competing interests rather than the aggregated interests of the economy and society as a whole. Efficient and rational decision-making it's not. Nor does it appear capable of tackling long-term problems. (Comment on this story.)

China is the extreme opposite, of course: It can ride roughshod over the lives of its citizens. For example, building a dam that requires the forced relocation of 1.5 million people who have no channels through which to protest. But China's system is unlikely to give individual corporations the power to veto or shape government decision making to suit their own bottom line at the expense of the needs of the system as a whole in the way that, to choose but one example, U.S. pharmaceutical companies are able to wield political influence to deny the government the right to negotiate drug prices for the public health system. Fukuyama seems to be warning that in Darwinian terms, the Chinese system may currently be more adaptive than the Land of the Free.

TEARS flowed and hearts broke as almost 1000 people farewelled popular Toowoomba Grammar School student Alexander Stewart yesterday.
The 16-year-old and his brother Alistair were involved in a tragic quad bike accident on June 15 at Oaklands Stud, their family's property at Southbrook.
Alex, as he was known to his friends and family, died at the scene.
Mourners gathered in the TGS Assembly Hall to share memories and hear stories of the promising boy's life.
They heard how Alex treasured spending countless hours working at the stud with his dad, Toowoomba Turf Club chairman Neville Stewart, his mum Kaylene and younger brothers Alistair and Hamish.
Queensland Racing chairman and close family friend Bob Bentley told of Alex's love for the stud and his passion for the racing industry.
Family friend David Chester watched Alex grow up and said he always met him with “a cheery grin and a crushing handshake”.
“And he always looked you right in the eye,” Mr Chester said.
Alex's godmother Kay Skehan travelled all the way from Ireland to read the moving poem, A Child on Loan by Edgar Guest.
“He'll bring his charms to gladden you and should his stay be brief, you'll have these precious memories to comfort you through grief,” she read.
Alex's mate Kahl Schemioneck offered this farewell.
“He is a friend we will never forget and he is a brother I will love forever,” Kahl said.
At the conclusion of the service TGS students stood arm in arm in a guard of honour.
They poured their hearts into a spirited war cry as their lost mate departed the school gates for the last time.
“We will never forget Alex Stewart,” headmaster Peter Hauser said.
“We will miss him dearly.”

VSC-Vehicle Stability Control also known as ESC,DSC, ESP,VDC by different manufactures.  VSC works to keep the car travelling in the intended direction under the control of the driver even when they may have to take rather severe evasive action to avoid an accident, or if they misjudge a corner. The VSC sys helps prevent the vehicle from sliping sideways as a result of strongfront wheel skid or strong rear wheel skid during cornering.
VSC constantly monitors wheel speed, steering angle and vehicle posture and if it starts to become unstable, VSC momentarily activates the brake on one wheel to move the car on its rotational axis and back onto the correct line. If required it will also control the throttle butterfly to reduce engine torque, all totally seamless.
When  the road surface is slippery and driver can't control it, the car has lost grip and has started to understeer around the bend.  the driver backing off the accelerator and applying the brakes may only make it worse. So VSC activates,VSC employs the sensors, actuators and computer electronics of the braking and traction control sys to help anticipate and minimise skidding when cornering. VSC also adjust the power applying the brake to one wheel to anchor it , rotate the car back to help ensure the vehicle maintains the line you intended.
The 2006 IIHS study concluded that VSC reduces the likelihood of all fatal crashes by 43%,and single-vehicle rollover by 77-80%. There you go, when you set out to search your next car, please consider the vehicle eqipped with VSC sys. It's really saving lives.

On some vehicles, a sulfur smell or 'rotten egg' odor may be noticed coming from the exhaust system. The odor is usually noticed after a cold start, fast idle, extended periods of idling and full throttle acceleration. Sulfur smell is not an indication of an engine concern and will not cause reduced  driveability or durability of the engine or any of its emission components.
The sulfur smell or 'rotten egg' odor is caused by high amounts of sulfur in the petrol being used in the vehicle. The reduction section in your catalytic converter, the part that changes NOx and some CO (carbon monoxide) back to N2 and CO2, also has the tendency to start absorbing SOx, or oxides of sulfur when its internal temperature drops below about 500°C.  As sulfur is a natural contaminate in most fuels which, when burned, are emitted as oxides of sulphur.

When the engine is required to put out more power and the catalytic converter heats up over 600°C, the catalytic converter starts releasing the SOx as H2S and SO3.  The SO3 has no odor but the H2S (Hydrogen Sulfide) gas does, which is what you smell.  That usually means the reduction section of your converter IS working, regenerating itself, and purging the accumulated sulphur.   
Sulfur is normally eliminated during the refining process, but there is still fuel containing high amounts of sulfur on the market. It will most likely emit sulfur smell from the exhaust system. When high sulfur fuel is burned, there is a chemical reaction in the catalytic converter causing the sulfur to oxidize.
As the vehicle is driven, the oxidizing reaction odor in the converter will decrease with mileage and age.

Replacing the catalytic converter will not eliminate sulfur smell and replacement will just extend the period of time needed for the converter to 'age' allowing it to reduce sulfur smell to an acceptable level.

1.Switch to a different brand of fuel and drive the vehicle for at least 100 miles. Monitor the decrease or
increase in sulfur smell.
2.Do not add any type of 'fuel additive' as this could add sulfur to the fuel and cause/increase the odor.
3.Try to avoid extended periods of short trip driving or aggressive acceleration.
4.Request information from your local fuel dealers on the amounts of sulfur in their gasoline. Try to use fuel
containing the lowest amounts of sulfur.
5.Visit the fuel company websites to stay informed on any changes in fuel or environmental regulations

There are many family education books in the market. Parents tend to tell the audience what is right and wrong with evidence of their own child. If we look at this kind of book in a scientific way, we have questions: 1. The sample size is too small, only one or two. 2. The study duration is too short. How if it is a life long observation? 3. Besides dimension on academic achievement, is there any other endpoints, especially those representing more important aspects for a human being, to be observed?

大多数单词都有多语意。
使用的时候要注意情境和语境。多学习运用权威字典上的例句。
有的单词，如get，一辈子也难究尽其含义。。。

balabala么，那个是communication。2个东西：1要有communicate的内容——你喜欢，他（们）喜欢，可以聊。得看你接触的人是什么background之类的。比如让我聊板球，我两眼很黑，我也不爱聊。你有兴趣，在国内起码可以了解板球网球啥啥，明星啊，俱乐部啊，诸如此类。当然，你163，还有你的生意方面的吧。2communication是双（多）向的，你能balabala是一方面，还得听懂别人balabala——国内基本没啥可学的，因为没那么多人bala你。印度英语啊，希腊口音啊，德国啊，越南的，诸如此类，这里不都是educated的人，跟你说一口educated accent.你听力如何？看剧能够提高你的听力，8过是长期的。

其次bala就是语言方面的东西了。那么bala语言很重要的一个问题，就是culture～很简单，每个地方的subculture不同，用的lexis也不同，这个可以说，西澳和Mel肯定有差别。还是得和local的人打交道的过程中才能学会。无论是formal的，还是jargon之流，甚至slang。

学术文章：也2个。
1.1个，你的思维能力如何。就是一个something，你表达出来，逻辑啊，表述啊，怎么样。国内做人如何，写文章也一样，这个不是人人都做得好的。中文讲的不知所云的，英文估计也好不到哪去。跟做人，“素质”什么，有关。我看过遣词造句美的不得了的东西，但是就是不知道它想说啥。参考：leader讲话做报告。另外，学术论文或者什么所谓的严谨的文章，不是什么中国式的风花雪月的散文啊，记叙文啊，什么这些破东东，所以基本上logic是第一重要的。

1.2个，中西方思维差异的驾驭能力。看看书吧，很多好书可以教你，这个国内可以自学～有钱去English speaking country上个学，学校也能学到，if you have some good teachers.让excellent professor教育你一番可能收获更大，这里资源也多一些。

2个，这还是一个communication的问题——只不过对方是隐藏的，这个时候你得假象一个reader，看你reader的background，knowledge，social status，relationship with you。。。等等。这个还是和1没法分割，其次你的formal/written language驾驭能力。


笼统空洞的建议就只能这么多了。
