First of all, you need to see (bulk billing) GP (if not sure, see several) to make sure it is eczema.
Secondly, yes, it takes days (maybe even one week) for the symptom to disappear. Keeping the skins moisturized (and cool) prevent further irritations. If serious, GP usually prescripts hydrocortisone. It works, but you don't want to use it often (it discolors the skins), so daily care is very important.
