Solaris does have some unique features that's really clever. No one else has it.
They also control Java so it's a big leverage for Google to have.
I think Google is looking at a different paradigm now, one that is post Java/.NET age. There is a buzzword for it already - cloud computing
It basically moves everything except the presentation layer into the cloud, and for the user GUI, which almost always lives in a browser, Ajax is there to handle screen updates and provide a satisfactory user experience. cross platform compatibility is no longer important, as this job is now offloaded to the browser itself.
So, C++ rules at the back end, and Ajax is there for the front end. Java will still be doing well in the enterprise market, however there may not be a place for it in the cloud computing age, if that age ever comes.
Same for .NET, but .NET is backed by a company of monster size, and this company is serious about taking .NET into cloud computing - Windows Azure will be hosting .NET and Live apps, is designed for data centers and will scale better than any existing Windows server OS, is Microsoft's answer to cloud computing.
So will SUN wake up and fight for its own survival in this new arena? I can't see anything or anyone stopping Sun from joining the cloud computing competition, use their own OS to provide SnS/SAAS to their loyal customers and beyond. I guess that's a decision for its CEO so let's just wait and see.
Actually, here is one thing they can do: its former CEO and current Google CEO, Eric Schmidt, has a personal wealth of 6 billion USD. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_E._Schmidt) Sun as a company worth 3 billion USD. (http://finance.google.com/finance?q=NASDAQ%3AJAVA). So all they need to do is to convince Eric to buy Sun with his own money then run it himself!
