“TEACHER AIDE” Skilling Queenslanders for Work – Work Placement (SQW-WP)
Project Description
*Pending approval from the Department of Employment and Industrial Relations.


TEACHER AIDE PROJECT        
The Teacher Aide Project is partnership between Council and Department of Employment and Industrial Relation (DEIR) to provide work experience and opportunities to gain more sustainable employment for 10 people from migrant and refugee communities who have interest to continue teaching career.

The Teacher Aide Project participants will be placed in different State Primary schools around Brisbane. The work placement duration is 22 weeks (two school terms). Participating schools are chosen depending on number of migrant and refugee children attending the school and a level of assistance they may need.

The project participants will:
•        assist school in dealing with migrant and refugee children
•        raise awareness about different cultures
•        liaise between school and migrant/refugee parents
•        other teacher aide duties

School can also proposed a special project that they would like their participant to work on. The participants will not replace the existing teacher aid position but will be an additional support to school.

During the work placement the participants will receive Certificate IV Training in Teacher Aid or similar qualification that can help them find sustainable employment in the education field.

The participants will be required to attend six weeks of accredited English Training for Teachers before starting their work placement. This will be unpaid training but will provide them with knowledge about Australian workplace and English language and jargon relevant to teaching field.

WHAT IS A SKILLING QUEENSLANDERS FOR WORK – WORK PLACEMENT PROJECT (SQW-WP)?
A Work Placement Project is a component of the State Government’s “Skilling Queenslanders For Work” initiative. The aim of the SQW-WP is to provide people with skills and experience so that they are able to secure ongoing employment

The Teacher Aide Project is jointly funded by the State Government and Brisbane City Council.  The project will provide full time employment, to migrants and refugees who are willing to continue their career in teaching field.

I HAVE COMPLETED A SQW-WP (formally known as CJP) - CAN I DO ANOTHER ONE?
Not usually, but it does depend on your circumstances.

OTHER INFORMATION RELEVANT TO A SQW-WP PARTICIPANT
SQW-WP participant will be employees of Brisbane City Council  placed in the various residential centres. Council is the largest local authority in the country, and the only Council that covers an entire capital city. We have a large and diverse workforce of over 7,000 people, with numerous workplace locations geographically dispersed throughout Brisbane.  As Council employees the participants will be subject to the industrial awards and agreements that apply to all Council workers.

IS THE SQW-WP PARTICIPANT COVERED IN THE CASE OF WORK INJURY?
SQW-WP participants will be covered by Council’s Workers Compensation Workcover Policy.

HOW MANY POSITIONS WILL BE AVAILABLE?                  
The project will employ 10 people.

WHAT IS THE DURATION OF THE PROJECT?               
In total, the participants will be recruited for 28 weeks:
•        6 weeks of English language training for teachers (unpaid)
•        22 weeks of work experience and training (paid )

WHAT IS THE START AND FINISH DATES OF THE SQW-WP PROJECT WITH COUNCIL?
Start Date: December 2008                         Finish Date:  June 2009

(These dates are to be confirmed and are dependent on project approval from DEIR)

AGED CARE PROJECT       
The Aged Care Project is partnership between Council and Department of Employment and Industrial Relation (DEIR) to provide work experience and opportunities for more sustainable employment for 10 people from migrant and refugee communities who have an interest in working in aged care services.

The Aged Care project participants will be employed full time for 20 weeks in various low care residential/hostel facilities and high care residential/nursing homes. All participating aged care centres have been chosen because they have capacity and willingness to accommodate participants, future employment prospects and are accessible by public transport. Participants’ prior learning, skills and qualifications will be considered when placing them in particular centre.

During the work placement the participants will perform the duties of an aged care assistant within a centre, including provision of personal care and hygiene assistance to centre residents and designing and delivering of activities.

During the work placement the participants will receive accredited Certificate III Training in Aged Care that can help them find more sustainable employment. The training will be delivered in two stages:
•        One week prior to the project commencement the participants will receive training in first aid and orientation to aged care including policies and legislations necessary to know before starting the placement.
•        Ongoing training one day per week.

REMUNERATION
Wage rates for Work Placement participants are based on the rates provided in the training Wage Award – State, and the type of work being performed as part of the project.  The skill level for this project is Skill Level A (Office Administration, Information Technology, Recruitment and selection, Finance, Engineer).  In addition to this the participant will receive a 25% loading of the base hourly rate, on the basis that they are not entitled to be paid for annual leave, sick leave, public holidays not worked by the participant, or any other allowances.


WHAT SKILLS AND/OR QUALITIES DO I NEED TO POSSESS TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS SQW-WP PROJECT?
•        A genuine interest in pursuing your career in aged care
•        Ability to undertake Certificate III Training in Aged Care
•        Ability to work as a member of a team
•        Ability to undertake on the job training  
•        Ability to understand and take directions from others.
•        Ability to work within workplace rules and guidelines

“OVERSEAS TRAINED PROFESSIONALS” Skilling Queenslanders for Work – Work Placement (SQW-WP)

OVERSEAS TRAINED PROFESSIONALS PROJECT       
The Overseas Trained Professionals Project is partnership between Council and Department of Employment and Industrial Relation (DEIR) to provide work experience and opportunities for more sustainable employment for overseas trained professionals.

The Overseas Trained Professionals Project will employ 10 migrants and refugees who have overseas qualifications but are lacking Australian work experience relevant to their profession.  Some examples of professions include: construction and civil engineering, town planning, accounting and finances, landscaping architects, business analyst and traffic engineering.

The participants will be employed full time for 20 weeks in various Council branches such as Brisbane City Works, Brisbane Infrastructure, Town Planning, Family and Community Services, Finance and City Business.

The participants will be required to attend six weeks of accredited English Training for Professionals before starting their work placement. This will be unpaid training but will provide them with knowledge about Australian workplace and English language and jargon relevant to their profession.
