intern's feedback

Hi Coco and Davina,

As I told you earlier about successfully obtaining a graduate accountant role last week with a CA firm in North Sydney. I want to share with you about the interview process.

Basically, it was quite a short interview for about 20mins, here are some of the questions I can recall:
1.        Tell me about more about your degree (when people see liberal studies, they are not sure what exactly it involves)
2.        What main duties do you have at Bly?
3.        Why do you want to leave your current job?
4.        What do you enjoy doing at in your spare time?
5.        What skills have you gained from you studies and working at Bly?
6.        Are you willing to undertake further studies to become a CA?
I think they are they main questions, the rest are just like a convresation, we talked about what sports I liked, etc. As it is a graduate role, I suppose they did not expect much experience and mainly considered whether I would fit in with their work culture. But I certainly think level 1 training and internship helped me to gain valuable experiece which enabled me to stand out from other graduates. And also, the interview program was extremely helpful, it boosted my confidence and I know what to expect from interviews.

Once again, I want to say thank you for your guidance and support, this has been a really valuable experience for me. And I think so many people can benefit from your programs.

I will be in touch to let you know how I go with my new job, I start on the coming Monday.

Have a good weekend!

Regards,
Simo

Dear Coco

I’m very happy to inform you that I did my second round of interview with an accounting firm in Hornsby and at the end of interview I signed a part-time 6 months contract as an assistant accountant.
I wish to thank you for all of your support and your help. Your training program and also the Internship program was the key of my success, without those knowledge it was almost impossible for me to find a job.
My first interview was mainly about my personality, my qualifications, my work experiences and the reason I chose this path for myself. They asked lots of questions about my responsibilities in Bly and the reason I left.
The second interview included some general questions about Tax, GST and Preparing the BAS. Then they introduce me to other staff and left us in a room for about 30 minutes. I knew they were testing my communication skills.
I am very much happy to get this job and my advice to other trainees is that never give up. I applied for more than 200 hundred jobs during the last few months and I got rejected times and times, but I didn’t give up.
Once again a big thank you to Coco for this fantastic training program and her sincere work for helping trainees to find a job.
Kind regards
Roya

Hi Coco,

I really apprecaited the time in Bly and also apprecaited the help from you and Davina.   Because of this couse, I could start my accounting career in Australia.
In my first round interview, I were interviewed by two CPA.   They asked following quesitons: (because the interview took one hour, followinga are only what i could remember)
1. Tell the whole stories about every achievements listed on my resume (I list 5 achievements)
2. Structure of my financial team
3. My responsibility (detail to daily, weekly, monthly and yearly)
4. How many days i took to finish my month end report
5. After fininshing my month end report, what i am doing?
6. Detail to describe how to do the cash flow control?
7. How to do the consolidation
8. What functions I used in Excel
9. How many invoices my previous company will process per day (AP and AR)
10. what is my goal in short term and long term?
11. How many segments I have finished in CPA?
12. What is the turnover of your previous company?
13. Who I report to?
14. How to do the PAYROLL? (adjustment)
15. My skill about reconciliation.

In my second round interview, all are behavior questions:
1. When I could finish my CPA?
2. What is the most difficult sition I faced?
3. What I like and dislike my previous company?
4. How to evaluate your performance?
5. 15 minutes to write a letter to supplier to request a 5% discount for a amount we owed to the supplier.

Again, many thanks for COCO and Davina's help.  On the day I got the offer, I received many messages from the classmate of Bly to say congratation to me.  I am really touching.

Looking forward to hearing good news from other classmates of Bly.

Cheers,

Winnie

Hi Coco & Rachel,

I'm very happy to let you know that I got the job and started working this week. Thank you so much Coco for the reference check and for the valuable training you gave which was the most important thing for me to secure this position. Rachel, I appreciate the support you gave to me during the training programme which was helpful as well. Even though the job duties are quite different to the what I have learnt during the training the knowledge I gained is very useful for me to pick things faster.

Once again thanks Coco & Rachel for the programme you carry on. I think by joining the training I took the right decision in my job search.

Cheers

Subject: RE: Sally  - Reference Request

Hi Coco, Cindy & Yolanda,

Thanks so much for the reference check and I have received the offer today for this AA role!

Joining Bly probably was the wisest thing I have ever done for my career where I learned all the basic knowledge needed in the real working environment and Coco is such a great role model.

After the internship I got a job as an accounts clerk recommended by a previous boss of my part time job demonstrating that social networking is highly important.

Soon after I started working with this company, I started my CPA and have now finished 3 segments. I realised that I needed another job (something more substantial that could fulfill the CPA PER). So, I started job hunting again.

As we all know, the job market has been quiet for a while and there were not as many job ads on Seek. But luckily, I got this interview opportunity. After 2 rounds of interview, and thanks to Coco's reference, I got it!

So do not give up no matter how long you have been trying. Maybe your dream job is just waiting for you around the corner.

Thanks again Coco for the reference check!
Thank you Selina and Cindy for caring about me so much and being actively involved with my reference check!

Wish you all the best and you are the best!

Kind regards,

Sally

Dear Selina,
Thank you very much for the reference check. I am pleased to inform you that I got the the Tax Consultant and Accounts Clerk role with a local company here in Perth. Training with you guys provided me a great confidence and it was really helpful for securing the position. There were two interviewers, one was accountant and the other one from the management team. They asked me these questions during the interview and they were taking the notes of my responses as well.

Tell me something about yourself??

How your education and experience prepared you for the job??

What motivates you to put the effort??

Describe a situation where you had to make a difficult decision?

How you deal with pressure situations and explain a particular situation where you have multiple tasks to do and you manage the work flow?

What rewards do you expect from your career?

What was your biggest challenge in the previous role?

How you deal with an aggressive and abusive customer?

I was applying for different accounting roles in Brisbane and then I moved to Perth. Its took me couple of months to secure the position. I always keep record of every job application so that I can follow up with the employers. According to me follow up is a good strategy to stands out of the crowd. Constant and Consistent effort is the key to success. My fellow students and friends please don't loose your heart and keep on trying. One day you will get the reward of your efforts. One particular suggestions for the trainees is that always prepare yourself for the interview.  Thank you once again for the help provided by Premier Accounting Team particularly Selina, Coco and all others who work there.

Kind regards,
Adam Zaman

Hi Coco,
How are you recently? I got the offer for the assistant accountant role finally, I will start it very soon and I would like to refer my first position to your trainees.
I would like to thank you again for the reference and the training and it is very helpful.
My current position will be vacant and My boss asked me recommend a person. So I am wondering, whether you have any trainer to recommend. It is a part time job at present, 2 days (Mondays and Wednesday) per week. It is possible to be a potential full time job.
The company envolves in International Trading and Human Resource service. Most employees are Korean.
The job is envolved in payroll, AP/AR, BAS and IAS so it is helpful for entry level people.
They are looking for a person who has a sound accounting background, mature, and reliable. PR is an advantage because they hope that the person can work in a long term.
I hope that you can recommend some suitable interns.
Thanks for your help again. I look forward to hearing from you.
Best Regards,
Hillary

I am writing to thank you and your team and give a brief introduction of my interview. It was in this afternoon and I  got the offer at the end of interview. The position is Audit Associate of a Singapore audit firm.

Before the commencement of the interview I was asked to finish a quiz about some transaction journals. The interviewer took away my quiz paper after I finished, so when I was filling the Application Form he was reviewing my quiz paper.  At the beginning of the interview, I was asked to introduce myself.  Even though I practiced my self- introduction many times, I was still very nervous. In the self-introduction I emphasized my internship experience with your firm. I said that I learned how to apply accounting knowledge into real business situations during this internship and I took accruals as an example. I also mentioned that it enhanced my knowledge of  MYOB Accounting Software and Microsoft Excel.  The interviewer told me he knew I did rehearsal and he would like to give me some credits.
Then he told me I did well in the quiz and discussed the mistakes I made. Later he asked me some questions regarding Singapore Accounting Standards. Very fortunately, I started to study ACCA paper P2 (Corporate Reporting- Singapore Variance) three weeks ago so I managed to provide solutions.  The interviewer pointed out that they wanted to hire a Singaporean or PR but he still arranged this interview because of my academic result in UNSW.  He said he rarely gave offers straight away but he was really impressed by my performance in the interview and quiz.  So he offered me this position at once.  I will start work after the Singapore immigration office issued the work Consent letter to me which probably will take one week.

Again, Coco, thank you for modifying my resume and the wonderful training you provide.

Cheers,

Monica

Hi Coco,

Good news, I got a phone call today from the managing director and he told me that they are happy to offer me the job as an Assistant Finance Officer. He told me that I can start from next week.

I applied for the job through seek and was invited to the interview by a phone call after few weeks, I only had a one round interview with two managers. Interview lasted for about an hour and the questions were  all Behavioral type.

The Questions were very similar as the interview questions we covered in Interview class and they helped me a lot to answer the questions fluently and helped me to be very confident.

At the end of the interview I asked them few questions and tried to leave a good impression by saying that I am very interested in the role and keen to work for your company.

Another important thing which helped me to get the job was that when I came home after the interview I send an email to both interviewers to thank for the interview. In my letter I tried to pick up the most important point about the role and the company and wrote about it by saying "I have a real interest in this area of work. Being the environment of the job very fast pasted made me more interested in the role. I believe my hard working personality would certainly enable me to make a valuable contribution to your Company."

I would recommend all the trainees to apply the last point during their interview process which would really push one step forward then other candidates.

This is pretty much about my interview experience.

Thank you Coco for all your professional help and support during the training and after the training which really helped me to get this job.

With Kind Regards,

Zane

I would like to personally thank you for helping me out with my position as a Payroll Officer at this Drivers recruitment company. I wish to tell you that you guys are amazing and that this internship worked wonders on preparing me for the interview as well as the job. So thanks a trillion again.

About this Drivers recruitment company, its a medium sized company dealing with recruitment of commercial truck drivers carrying various grades of licenses. The head office is located in Brisbane at Underwood where the main operations, IT, technical, Payroll and Accounts are based. I am in the payroll division as a Payroll Officer and closely work with the Accounts payable Officer, Senior Accountant and Operations Manager.

The job description for a new comer like myself is to first familiarize with the system which is an in house developed software called DriverPop that is comprehensive and quite user friendly. I won't shy away from saying that it is very different from Myob and to get used to it takes quite a bit of time, but once the flow is reached, it becomes easier. The tasks are on time constrained and everyday the work is cut out for me like every other job.

The interview was informal and brief with generic and behavioral questions like why would you like to be in this job? how do you behave in a conflict environment? Would you consider yourself to be detail oriented person? etc. The answers are not definitive and they differ from person to person. My mantra was not to say yes to everything, but mix a largely positive answer with a bit of negative so that they can understand that you are not perfect but are willing to learn. For eg: The interviewer asked me that what was the most negative aspect about myself? and I said "Confidence". It was the truth but also the right answer because I would like to sharpen my confidence and people skills more. My questions were not very much accounting based but even generic questions can be the decisive factor.

Lastly, I would like to wish you all the very best for future prospects and again, a tremendous thanks to Selena especially for everything.

Take care and best regards,
Sumona

Hi Selina,
I've just received the job offer from the company this afternoon and I really appreciate your help.
The job I'm applying for is Data Entry and Contract Management. I think the reason I got the interview is thank to what I have learnt from Premier Accounting. I put internship descriptions in my resume and it becomes more attractive to employer. There was two interviewers, one was accountant and the other was manager/director of company. They asked me questions below:
- Tell us about yourself and what can you offer to the company
- What are your 3 best qualities
- What is your dream job/ What do you want to become in the future
- What make you want to be an accountant (although it's not position I'm applying for)
- What did you not like about your last job/internships
- What did you learn during your internship
- How can you demonstrate your willingness to learn...
After that they tested my excel skills and asked me to write a short email (dealing with an angry customer) just to test my written English.

This is just a start for me since I am aiming for the position of assistant accountant. Of course I will take this job seriously but I will also keep trying until I got that position.
Once again, thank you for the reference check and I'm grateful that I did the training course with you, Coco and everyone else in Premier Accounting.
Kind regards,

Hi Coco, Jeff and Jane,

I am happy to let you know that I have been able to secure a position of Bookkeeper with a

transport & logistics company in. It has been a tough battle for me getting through

the interview process and finally get the appointment letter.

Even though the position says Bookkeeper, the responsibilities actually involves that of the Assistant Accountant.

For example I am also responsible for processing Payroll, Lodging BAS and preparing end of month journals

, apart from A/P , A/R and Recoonciliations.

My training  has been the key to getting this job. Right from building a professional resume to the job hunting

and interview process , it's all about having solid structure, which has been provided like Coco mentioned,

its immensly important that you keep records of the jobs you have been applying, so when you get called for interview

you know which one it is.

Few things that I want to share from my experience that may be of help to other interns;

Keep records of job you apply and check if you get response.

Dont only count on Seek and Career one, try all different sorts of, like I got this job from daily telegraph.

Make sure the jobs you are applying are within a reasonable travelling distance from you.

I hope this helps. All the best to you all

Dear Cindy and Coco,
I would like to inform you that I have been offered a full-time “Accounting and Admin” position in a consultancy firm in Parramatta. I like to take this opportunity to thank Cindy and Coco who has assured me on-job assistant that I may need to get started with this job. My internship with Bly Accounting helped me get back into main stream accounting stream.
In order to offer tips and encouragement to my fellow colleagues, I would like to share with you some of the details of this job interview.
Some of the questions asked by the interview panel are as below:
1.      After exchanging greeting, I was asked to introduce your self
2.       What do you expect to do in this job?
3.       Do you think you can contribute and design an accounting system if you were our first accountant.
4.    Have you anytime participated in reconstruction of accounting system. ( my 4.5 years of overseas work experience with a chartered accounting firm came handy)
5.       How efficient are you in the use of MYOB.
(Ans: Although I have used numerous accounting softwares overseas, I have limited exposure with MYOB. But I am fairly confident of handling it since I have strong accounting fundamentals and competent computer literacy.)
In fact I am banking on Cindy and Coco who has assured me to help me with MYOB accounting entries on some of business transaction I would need to work on the job.

I wish all the best to all and thank Cindy and Coco for providing assistant and confidence.
Regards,
Samir Haldankar

Dear Yolanda

I had an informal interview as the company is very small at the stage and they are

more focusing on the candidates' personality.

During the interview, the very fundamental and key issue he was concerning about

is whether my believes match their believes. So he spent most of the time

explaining his company background, his mission and vision. (As an immigration

agency, his core value is to help his clients in every way he can, instead of seeking

for the highest commissions.) After I showed my interest, the second thing he

talked about is my commitment, in another words, would I work for him for at least 2

years.

So, for me, I believe individuals' personality matters, after the interview, I concluded

that the key characteristics he want his employees to have are honesty, integrity,

loyalty, desire to learn,  confidentiality and responsibility. Also, it is important to

understand the company's background, mission and vision, and ask yourself

whether you agree with them and have the desire to help the company to reach

their goal if you consider to work for them for a long time.

Last but not least, it is very good to have someone to give you a reference. I was

refereed by the HR manager of my school. My boss got most of the information

about me from him.

I wish it helps.

Best wishes

Irene

Hi Selina,

How are you? How is things? About my work experience recognition. Coco, after hearing my situation, offered her help.

I was on holiday and came back last week. Recently I started working in small organisation as a Accounts Assistant Part Time. Due to the size of the company it is only few hours job per week. However I keep applying and I am getting some responses. Hope I will land in the right role soon. I am getting excited because joining level 1 training and internship was a made these changes.

One more news that I passed another 2 segments of CPA professional level, FRM and taxation with distinction.

The job is starting on 2*th Jan next year and the position I am going to take is Financial Analyst. I am very happy with the result and I want to say a big THANK YOU to you for being a great reference for me. Dear Yolanda,

As you are aware I was successful in obtaining a graduate position at a top Australian manufacturing company before the Christmas break. My position deals directly with managing the company’s expenses (Expense Reporting Co-op). I am extremely happy to have achieved this position and I hope this email can inform and help other interns who are looking to secure a grad position.

The grad program for my company consisted of three main stages: a phone interview, assessment centre and face to face interview.

In the phone interview they asked general questions about my university studies and they also wanted to find out what I knew about the company. Speaking about my university studies was fairly straightforward but when it came to speaking about the company my advice to interns is that before a phone interview they should make sure they have done some research on the company. From this research interns should be prepared to talk about their general understanding of what the company does, the company’s clients, the company’s vision and values ect. (candidates may also be required to demonstrate what they know about the company in the face to face interview).

The next stage was the assessment centre where all remaining candidates met at the office and were put into small groups for an activity that was assessed. The activity was not accounting related and just involved your general knowledge (e.g. giving a response to a hypothetical scenario). While it is important to try and obtain an end result that best meets the task requirements, I felt what was more important to the assessors was the way you interact with your group members, alongside your contributions to the task. I find this stage could be quite challenging if you do not have much experience working with people you have never met before. Therefore in this stage I feel teamwork and leadership skills are the most important.
My advice for this stage is to always try and contribute something to your group, monitor the time (you have a limited amount of time so the assessors can see how you work under pressure) and to listen to and acknowledge your team members’ suggestions. Assessors will not like it if you do not speak much but at the same time the assessors will not like it if you are too bossy/controlling. Therefore I recommend interns should try to best maintain a balance of not being too quiet but also not being too dominant.

In the face to face interview stage the interview started off asking about myself and my experiences, my most favourite and least favourite job and my most favourite and least favourite university subject. Then they went into behavioural interview questions that included a time where I showed attention to detail and a time where I had to learn on the fly. When answering the behavioural questions my advice is to use the STAR method taught in university, and in Jeff’s interview guidance session. Many examples of behavioural questions can be found on the internet which I used to practice but I do not recommend memorising answers. I find it is better to be familiar with the many experiences you have had at your work, university and extracurricular activities so you can aim to apply these to any questions. This is a technique Jeff covered and I found Jeff’s interview guidance session to be very helpful in preparation for this stage. If interns are struggling to come up with experiences I find that there are a lot of situations from the internship at Bly that can be used to respond to the questions.

In my interview there were also no technical questions and I feel being a graduate position the interview panel did not expect candidates to have a great deal of experience in the accounting field. The interview panel seemed to be impressed that I took the initiative to build on my accounting skills by taking on an internship at Bly Accounting while studying and they were also impressed by my extracurricular activities, involvement in sport and volunteer work I have done. Therefore when applying for a grad position my advice is that if you have had other experiences that may not be accounting related, but involve certain skills such as team work, problem solving and leadership, it is beneficial to include these experiences in your resume and application.

I wish all my fellow interns the very best in their job hunting. All of the interns I have had the privilege to meet were extremely friendly and supportive. It is great to see Bly Accounting has such a positive work environment. Many thanks to Yolanda for all the fantastic work put into Bly and for her support and assistance. Also many thanks to Jeff, Amy, Scarlet, Lien and Humam for all their help, especially Lien.

Kind regards

Hi Yolanda,

I have good news.

I got a job as a Management(Cost) Accountant. The training I had at Bly Accounting gave me so much confidence at the interview and I learnt a lot about book keeping, Tax and MYOB at Bly. I wouldn't have been confident enough to face the interview if I didn't know anything about GST or payroll or BAS. And also the interview board was impressed that I was doing an internship rather than staying at home.

I am sure what I did at Bly would be useful when I start my job next month. Also, maybe because of my previous overseas SAP working experience and CPA qualification, I was lucky enough to working in this type of large listed Company again.

Yolanda, I would really like to thank you, Jeff, Humam and Amy for the support you guys been given me during the training and Internships. You all were eager to answer any question any time. And all the best for Bly Accounting.

You are doing a great job and I would recommend anyone to start their career with you guys.

Warm regards,
Kumudu

Dear Yolanda,

During the interview, the interviewer asked me the following questions: (I cannot remember the original words, but I tried to pick up the main points and the procedures)

1.      What’s your accounting backgrounds/qualifications/ what can you do?

I told him that I worked in Platinum Accounting, and showed him my resume and cover letter.

2.      He went through my resume roughly, and pointed on my cover letter and asked me what are those points

From what I can remember, this is the biggest part.

Coz in my reference letter, it is mentioned

AP/AR, Bank reconciliation, FAR, Monthly repayment adjustments, Accruals, Cost center reporting

P/L, General ledger reconciliation, BAS and GST

AP,AR are fairly easy, and general ledger reconciliation are things like bank reconciliation. FAR I did try to explain it in a more detailed way, because seems like they have very litter fixed assets. In addition, he focused on cost center more, because he said he never heard about that before.

I answered accordingly.

3.      He asked me on experiences in Platinum, what kind of businesses do we do, what jobs do we do

I said we deal with clients data, such as in internship 3, clients only have data entry in Spreedsheet, we need to enter them into MYOB.

4.      He said his accountant will do BAS for his business, and the main software he used was Excel, later on, he wants to switch to Xero.

I said I had experiences in using Xero and Sassu (in internship 6)

5.      He also asked me what’s my religion

6.      He also asked me what questions do I have.

I asked that, did he keep business/personal records separately= loan from/to director

And I also suggested that small business can lodge BAS in quarterly basis, but make payment annually.

As it is a small business (he only has one employee, but many contractors), he did not give me a really formal  interview I think. It was more like an introduction about his business and some chit-chat as well.

Hope this helps.

Dear everyone,

Please join us in congratulating Stella!

She is our latest intern who was successful in securing her first role in the accounting field as an Accounts Clerk in a small to medium size business transitioning from MYOB to XERO accounting software.

We have recently had many interns get hired across the finance and accounting industry during this busy end of financial year period and Stella is another who is able to begin her professional career.

She joined our internship in March and within 4 months was able to secure her first accounting role. Her background is quite common with other international graduates. She graduated from university a few years ago and also completed her Masters in Accounting last year for migration purposes. She worked part time in an admin role but she still struggled to secure any interviews in the current accounting industry through her job hunting.

The Australian accounting market has a stronger focus on work experience, local technical skills and software capabilities. This is to prove you have confidence to execute procedures unsupervised and work out solutions to real problems on real life accounting data, not just within your Degree.

Stella has shared her interview strategy with us, please refer to her interview feedback. With the help of our professional Internship Program and training hours, it took her only 4 months to secure this Accounts support position. We are really happy with her current achievement, because she worked really hard in her internship tasks and eventually the hard work was rewarded with this brand new position.

If you are in a similar situation to Stella and feel frustrated with your job hunting outcomes, please feel free to contact us for further information and assistance.
