Task:

Some people think that teachers should be responsible for teaching students how to judge right and wrong and how to behave well. Some say that teachers should only teach students about academic subjects. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Answer:

People have different views towards the responsibilities of teachers. Some believe that they should be in charge of the duty of educating students into citizens with good judgment and behavior, while some argue that they should only be responsible for teaching academic knowledge. In my opinion, both should be indispensable parts of teachers’ job duties.

It is important for teachers to teach students how to differentiate between the good and the bad, to gain a better sense of judgment. This is an essential skill for students to survive in a complex and ever-changing social environment, without which life will be a challenge for them. Also, in order to be qualified members of the society, students should also learn the basic code of conduct which is universally accepted. It is hard to believe a student who has no idea of how to be polite or show respect to others will be welcome by other members of the society. It is therefore one important task for teachers to make sure that their students understand these rules.

On the other hand, to be the future leaders of the country, students should be equipped with all the necessary academic knowledge. First, without adequate academic knowledge, students will be subject to failures and set-backs in their careers. For example, those who didn’t study mathematics well in school probably won’t be qualified for the position of programmer or statistician. Furthermore, for those who wish to pursue a higher education, e.g. a master’s degree in university, it is essential for them to have an expert knowledge of their relevant disciplines. Once again, teachers play vital roles here.

From my perspective, the responsibilities of teachers reside in both preparing students to be qualified members of the society, and equipping them with all the necessary academic knowledge. Both contribute to the future success of the students.

Question:

Many developing countries are currently expanding their tourist Industry. Why is it the case? Is it a positive development?

Answer:

It is true that the tourist industry is being promoted by a lot of developing countries out of various reasons. Although there are certain drawbacks related to the development, I still believe this trend benefits these countries.

Developing countries devote their resources to developing their tourist industry due to both economic and political concerns. One reason is that they want a booming tourist industry to contribute to the local economy and the growth of GDP of the country by generating more revenues for the governments. Another reason is that they wish to boost their international image by impressing the tourists coming from around the world with their iconic tourist attractions.

However, it is undeniable that there are certain drawbacks associated with this development. The natural landscape and cultural heritages tend to be over-exploited along with the development, causing some irreversible damage to those national treasures. Also, the pouring in of tourists from around world often causes the places where the tourist attractions are located to be over-crowded with people. This certainly does harm to the environment and quality of life of local people.

Despite the drawbacks, I still believe this represents a positive development. First of all, the prosperity of tourist industry helps to create jobs for the local people. The industry will not be able to sustain its growth momentum without the back-up of growing number of employees. Thus, people are entitled to more job opportunities. Furthermore, it also benefits the efforts to protect those natural and cultural heritage sites presented to the world, as a certain portion of the tourism revenues are designated for the maintenance and restoration of those sites.

In conclusion, I believe that the strategy of those countries taken in expanding their tourist industry is definitely a move in the right direction and should be strongly supported.

Question:

Some people say that computers can translate all kinds of languages. Therefore, it is not necessary for children to learn foreign languages. To what extent you agree or disagree?

Answer:

When it comes to language learning, I understand that modern technology has made it possible for languages to be translated by computers. However I don’t agree that should be the reason for children to stop learning foreign languages.

It is true that nowadays computers are able to perform a variety of sophisticated functions, including language translation. They are capable of translating large volumes of information written in foreign languages very quickly, and very importantly, on a real-time basis. However, translations done by machines like computers have considerable drawbacks, which are often inaccurate and need to be proof-read by man eventually. Therefore, they cannot serve as substitutes for humans in terms of translation.

On the other hand, children learn foreign languages due to various reasons, and to gain the abilities to translate foreign documents is just one of them. The most important reason it that it is necessary for them to learn foreign languages in case they are seeking further education in a foreign country. A great number of world renowned universities which the children are eager to be enrolled in are located overseas instead of in their home country. Consequently, it is absolutely necessary for them to understand the languages spoken in those countries in order to pursue studies there. Another reason is that children learn foreign languages to understand the foreign cultures, to expand their horizons. Under the circumstances of globalization, it is of vital importance for children to understand cultures of other countries, to gain an international perspective and prepare themselves for their future success.

In conclusion, I believe computers will not replace humans in translation, and children should be encouraged to learn foreign languages for their future studies and success in a global context.

Question:

Some people say the government should not put money on building theatres and sports stadiums, and they should spend more money on medical care and education. Do you agree or disagree?

Answer:

In terms of government spending, I agree with those people who suggest that more should be spent in improving the health care and educational systems. However, I don’t support their view of no government investment in theatrical and sports facilities such as theatres and sports stadiums.

It is true that the medical care and education are the key areas where governments should devote their financial resources. On the one hand, it is of vital importance to maintain a robust and well-functioning medical care system for all citizens in order to make sure that all of them are able to gain access to quality medical service in well-equipped medical facilities. This surely needs substantial financial support from governments. On the other hand, education lies in the centre of a government’s key missions. It is the major responsibility for governments to provide an ideal educational environment for all students, who are the future leaders of the country. With an effort to establishing advanced educational systems and facilities, governments should definitely channel more funds into this cause.

While spending handsome amount of money in medical care and education, governments should not neglect the areas of arts and sports as they also contribute to the success of the society. Artistic cultivation and spiritual life should be part and parcel of people’s daily life, which helps to improve the taste towards fine arts and even the moral standards of the entire population. Theatres, being one of the most important locations for the spiritual upbringing, should be maintained and operated using the governments’ budget. Other areas that governments should also invest in are sports facilities, such as the sports stadiums, which serve the purpose of venues for sports competitions as well as places for body exercises for ordinary citizens. These sports facilities benefit the physical well-being of the people. Governments should therefore also budget spending in this area, as it also helps to improve the health standards of the population.

In conclusion, while taking care of the medical and educational systems, governments should continue to fund the building of theatres and sports stadiums, to build a more diversified and successful society.

Question:

Modern buildings are appearing in large numbers. Some people believe that we should build more buildings in traditional styles. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Answer:

When it comes to building styles, some people prefer buildings constructed in traditional way to those modern buildings which are gaining popularity nowadays. In my view, both buildings should co-exist in the society.

It is true that the architecture constructed following a traditional pattern often represents a unique culture of the country and contributes to the preservation of cultural heritage that has been passed on through generations. For example, the Buddhist temples in China built in ancient Chinese way have become name cards of the country as they are unique for the nation. Nevertheless, despite their artistic and cultural value, the traditional buildings are often unable to serve a modern purpose. In the context of economic growth and population explosion, the land and space have become increasingly scarce. This requires the construction of more high-rise modern buildings rather than those traditional ones which tend to occupy much more space but accommodate fewer people.

On the other hand, the modern buildings have those merits that differentiate themselves from the traditional ones. The major benefit they bring is that they cater for the needs of modern economy and residence. Being constructed using cutting-edge technology, they are often designed in a scientific way to make it possible for large number of people to work or live inside them while occupying only a small piece of land. Nevertheless, we cannot neglect the fact that they are often inferior to the buildings in traditional style in artistic value, which is the reason why modern cities packed with modern architecture are often regarded as concrete jungles.

In conclusion, I suggest that buildings of modern and traditional style should both be encouraged for the sake of preserving a unique culture and serving the modern society.

Question:

Nowadays some people like to give help to the local community or provide people with direct help. Other people prefer to give money to national and international organizations. Discuss both of the two ways and present your own opinion.

Answer:

When it comes to rendering help for others, people make their own choices. Some prefer to help others directly or provide support to local community, while others opt for donating money to charitable organizations at home and abroad. From my perspective, both ways have their pros and cons.

Those in favour of helping others directly understand that aid provided in this manner is able to reach the beneficiary more quickly, as it isn’t being handled by a third party but managed by them directly. It is therefore a more transparent way of giving help, which to some extent minimizes the chances of embezzlement or misuse of the donated money, if any. Nevertheless, the drawback of this approach is also obvious. It is offered to a relatively small population which is restricted to people in the local community or people who have direct interaction with the helper. Hence, the benefits brought by it should be very limited.

On the other hand, some people choose to make donations in money through organizations. The money given in this way has a better chance of being used more wisely and in a more organized fashion, considering that the organizations taking the money are professional bodies specializing in charitable cause. Moreover, it is also expected to benefit a much wider population thanks to the extensive domestic and global networks of those organizations. Being an indirect way of giving money, it is likely to derail from its original purpose in the absence of a proper supervision. In some developing countries, the alleged corruption cases related to charitable organizations remind us of the importance of supervision over donated money.

In my view, both approaches are recommended despite their drawbacks. People may choose their own ways based on their needs and preferences, but they should make sure that the help offered will benefit those who are really in need of their support.

最后贴一篇我13年底写的雅思作文,这一篇没有参照SIMON的格式(那是还不知道simon的网站)。

Recent research has shown that within the European Union the largest difference between the earnings of men and women exists in the UK. Many equal rights campaigners believe that immediate action should be taken to close the gender pay gap.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this view?

Answer:

I strongly uphold the call of the equal rights campaigners to take immediate actions to close the gap of earnings between men and women in the UK.

While shouldering the same amount of job responsibility as men, women are still subject to unfair treatment in terms of their remuneration package compared with their male counterparts. It has been widely reported that, for the same piece of work with the same job descriptions, the salaries earned by the female employees are on an average level 10 to 20 per cent lower than the male employees with the same position. Even the CEOs who are female make significantly less than their male predecessors. It is an undeniable fact that such imbalance in salary payment does exist in the society nowadays and it is high time for us to take actions to tackle this problem.

Women are entitled to the same pay as men, not only because they are women, but also due to the roles played by them in the society. In addition to the regular work duties, women are required to devote much more energy and time to taking care of their families than men. In some sense, they work during day time in the office and work during night time at home. Usually when it is after work, husbands are able to take a rest and enjoy some leisure time, their partners are still busy with all the family chores such as cleaning, washing and babysitting. As women are taking up no less social responsibility and even more family responsibility than men, they should certainly have equal rights as men with regard to earnings.

Moreover, it would be very beneficial for building a more harmonious society once women and men are equally paid. In the work place, for example, there will be much less complaint and confrontation among colleagues because of the inequality in salary. Thus the turnover rates for companies will decrease and companies will be operated more efficiently. In the mean time, the social balance families will be maintained as now there is no such imbalance of pay between male and female family members as they contribute equally financially to their families.

In conclusion, it is crucial for the inequality in earnings between women and men to be eliminated, and it would be of tremendous amount of benefit to the society by doing it.
