MAY 1-4 (LABOUR DAY WEEKEND) – GIBRALTER RANGE NATIONAL PARK, NSW
Margaret Clark Ph 38781896
This spectacular World Heritage area consists of deep valleys, giant boulders, creeks, cascades, and a variety of habitats including rainforest, swamps, heath and woodlands. There are several walking tracks in the area, and birds seen include Sooty & Powerful Owls, Rufous Scrubbird, Southern Emu-wren, Chestnut-rumped Heathwren, Scarlet & Flame Robins. The Superb Lyrebird is often seen at the camping area in nearby Washpool Nat. Pk. We are camping at Mulligans Campground, and have booked the Group Camping area (suitable for tents). This area has a shelter shed with 2 large tables, benches, a gas and wood BBQ. Firewood is provided, so we can keep warm in front of a camp fire (It will be COLD at night). People with caravans or trailers can camp in the adjacent general camping area - it can’t be booked, but the rangers say there should be no problem getting a site. There are flush toilets, COLD showers, and rubbish bins are provided. Cost of camp $10 ppp day, plus a Vehicle Entry Fee of $7 per day per vehicle. This is payable on arrival, but annual passes may be obtained by calling NSW National Parks and Wildlife service on 1300 361 967, or going to their website at www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au Local BQ members have recommended a local professional bird-watching guide, Greg Clancy, who would be willing to take a group out, for a full day, on Saturday. This outing is optional, and depends on the number of people interested. It would be a full day, from early morning until after dark, when Greg will try and find some owls. The cost would be about $25 per person, if 20 people were to go.
Directions: From Brisbane travel down the New England Highway through Tenterfield, and continue to the small settlement of Dundee (approx. 65 Km from Tenterfield). Approx. 1 Km south of Dundee turn left into Dundee Bald Nob Road, and after about 11 km turn left at the T-junction, onto the Gwydir Highway. Continue about 42 Km to the Mulligans Hut turnoff (on the right, sign-posted), and continue about 9 Km along a gravel road to the campground. The National Park can also be reached travelling down the coast road to Grafton, then turning right onto the Gwydir Highway.
