In the human history, women continue fighting for the equality in every area of the social life. Some are very basic ones, such as the physical freedom; some are higher level, for example, the right to vote. Although in the modern civilized world, we believe women do have been treated the same like men, it may not be the truth.
Let us look at the chart here, showing the leisure time of both males and females, with their employment status. The statistic tells men obviously have more leisure time than women, in the three main employment statuses.
For full-time employees, males have around 48% leisure time, while females have 38%, which is 10% lower. The reason behind may be related to the unequal work load, the tradition that females usually take more responsibility in house keeping work and child caring. For those who don’t work, either because of unemployment or retirement, the situation is the same. Men have 85% of their time in leisure, while women have only 75%, again 10% lower.
The chart shows no males take part-time job, and surely none in the housewives category. Women choose part-time job may also because of better work-life balance. However, even for them, less leisure time is recorded then employed men. Part time working women have 40% leisure time and housewives only the same as men. This in a way proves that being a housewife is equally hard, if not harder then being a worker. |
