“It’s all about the eyes,” says Jefferyes, with the emphasis firmly on eyeliner and lashings of mascara.

1. To start, she shades the eyelid with a soft grey eyeshadow – try Revlon Lavender Unleashed, $24, or Bobbi Brown Gunmetal, $40 – keeping the colour strong close to the lashes, and fading out towards the socket.

2. Then she pencils bold black eyeliner around the edges of the eye, stretching it out slightly at the outer corner. “Not too much,” warns Jefferyes. “This look is not about sharp lines: it’s more about the soft, round look.” If she is using a soft liner such as Revlon Bedroom Eyes Powder Liner, $25, or Estée Lauder Artist Eye Pencil in Softsmudge Black, $38, Jefferyes smudges the line up into the eyeshadow. If she’s keeping it crisp, she chooses a liquid or gel eyeliner such as M.A.C Fluidline in Blacktrack, $32. The key, she says, is to keep the line close to the lashes intense.

3. Next, she curls lashes, then generously coats them with volumising mascara such as Diorshow Blackout, $49, M.A.C Loud Lash, $23, or Prescriptives Plush False Lash, $44, for extra oomph. “Make sure you comb your lashes in between coats of mascara,” she says, adding that for a little extra help you can top that with a few individual fake lashes. Her favourite trick for stunning eyes is a dash of silver shadow in the corner of the eye close to the nose, to add light to the area.

4. The other key element to this look, says Jefferyes, is radiant skin. Avoid pancake make-up, she cautions, instead “keep it light so you can see your own skin through the foundation”. After prepping skin with Dermalogica Day Bright, $85, for radiance, and a primer, she follows with foundation such as M.A.C Mineralize Satin Finish, $48, or YSL Perfect Touch Radiant Brush Foundation, $75, to even out skin tone.

5. It’s worth spending time hiding imperfections. “A good way to cover these marks is to apply a small amount of concealer to the mark with a fine brush, pat lightly with a tissue, then reapply and lightly powder.” In her bag are Becca compact concealer, $52, M.A.C Studio Finish Concealer Palette, $38, and Napoleon Perdis Cosmetics Pro Palette, $55.

6. The other areas of the face should be polished with a featherlight touch. Brows are lightly filled in, cheeks softened with “the lightest of soft pink or beige tones” and lips coloured with a soft pink or beige lipstick such as Stila lipcolour in Daisy, $38. Jefferyes suggests finger-patting lip colour to keep it “pretty and light”. And as a finishing touch, she suggests a very light dusting of M.A.C Mineralize Skinfinish, $44, which “puts a beautiful light shimmer over the face”.
