Age is definitely one factor the employers consider when assessing job applicants. If you're over 40, and still have no local experiences, although you might be totally competent, you'll probably still end up rejected. Think about it, if most guys your age are seniors and you're tinkering with trainee level work and have to put up with starter's pay, you wouldn't feel comfortable and the company won't think it's good for the morale.
