Enrolments in Chinese as a second language have steadily risen in Victoria - a development seen as crucial given the role China is expected to play as a major future trading partner. But University of Melbourne Chinese teacher training centre director Jane Orton said only about 150 students taking the Chinese second-language subject out of the 917 enrolled in 2012 came from non-Chinese-language backgrounds.
