Yes, Woy Woy is a good place. I just bought a property there.
Staying at Woy Woy and enjoying it's beauty for years.
Woy Woy being as commutable as it is to Sydney (Only just over an hour by train) and being near some of the most beautiful beaches in the world (The other often maligned Umina comes to mind, but it is also fine for the most part) for the prices you pay for rent/buying is a hidden gem. Don't tell anyone and let them keep thinking it is a warzone, that way our prices will stay cheap when we live there lol.
For your reference:
when I was young, Woy Woy Public School was officially declared a "disadvantaged" school based on things like the average income of parents, the amount on welfare, and a questionnaire that the students did showing that the furthest away from home some had been was Gosford - some had never even been to Sydney! However, the school was great (with its little bit of extra funding) and certainly I did OK out of it.
When I was school-age, Woy Woy High School had a terrible reputation for dropouts, drug taking, vandalism, people who didn't try at all, and teen pregnancy. I wasn't allowed (by my parents) to go there, so I commuted to another school. It's merged with Umina High now and is Brisbane Waters Secondary College... I have no idea if the fancy name has made any changes to the student body. I don't know anybody who goes there, and my friends who have high school-age kids have them in the Catholic system (and the Catholic high school is in Gosford). At least Woy Woy has the train station, so if you do decide you want to send your kids to high school off the peninsula, it's easily done.
As far as the community, where my parents are is lovely. It's walking distance to the waterfront, sporting fields, shops, train station, and primary school. There are two big shops there: one has Woolworths, Michels, a chemist, newsagent, baker, butcher, etc. The other one is much bigger and has Coles, Kmart, Franklins, hairdressers, lots of clothing stores, surf shop, Gloria Jeans, jeweller, food, etc. Just about every bank has a branch in Woy Woy (hm, maybe not Commonwealth). There's a leagues club in Woy Woy and a much smaller bowling club. Erina Fair is about a half an hour drive away, and Erina has EVERYTHING.
Ettalong and Umina are about 5 minutes drive away, and they have markets, cinema, a big club complex, and some great restaurants. It's about 20 minutes to get from Woy Woy to the entrance to the freeway.
There are regular trains to Sydney or north, and there is a good bus service that goes across the peninsula, or up to Gosford, or even direct to Erina Fair.
Woy Woy has the BEST pool complex! It's new - it was built a couple of years ago. It's indoors, so no sunburn - there's a 50m pool for laps, there's a hydrotherapy pool where baby swimming is held, there's another learn-to-swim pool, and a recreation pool for kids with a waterslide, and a shallow wading pool with a little slippery dip for younger kids. They have a waterpolo club and host half the Central Coast's games there. There's bubbles in the hydro pool, a spa, a sauna and a steam room, and in the complex there's also a big outdoor grassed area with BBQs (free!), indoor soccer/basketball, cafe with enclosed play area with climbing equipment, a gym and a creche!
There's a strong culture of soccer playing for kids (and some adults ) and there's also a rugbe league club.
There's a GREAT bike path too - it follows the waterfront round most of Woy Woy, and cuts in at the south at the pool complex. From the pool, if you head north on the path and don't get off, you'll actually end up at GOSFORD pool - it's about 15km long! (For the record, it takes about 3 hours to walk from Woy Woy to Gosford - trust me, I know ) That's the new path. There's an old path (that's in the process of being upgraded) that will take you from the pool south to Umina Beach.
