Great Coast Hinterland Great Walk
-a walk rich with story

Discover beauty, mystery and history along the 54 KM Gold Coast Hinterland Great Walk linking the species-rich, Gondwana Rainforests of Australian World Heritage Areas of Lamington and Springbrook plateaus via the scenic Numinbah Valley. Walk through an ancient volcanic landscape still being eroded by rushing streams and plummeting waterfalls, through lush rainforest with relicts of Gondwana fauna.

Water is central feature of this walk. Its story is of power and majesty. What has shaped this landscape, given life to the forests and wildlife and is part of the land’s spirit. Witness the power of waterfalls as they continue to carve cliffs and gouge creeks and rivers. Smell the cool, damp earth shrouded by the subtropical and cool temperature rainforests. Glimpse the shy inhabitants – many rare or endangered.

The Gold Coast Hinterland Great Walk could be divided into three sections and completed in three days

Bodrer Track Section
Green Mountains (O’Reilly) to Binna Burra
21.4 KM, 7 hrs

Woonoongoora Section
Binna Burra to Woonoongoora walkers’camp
23.6 KM, 6-8 hrs

Warringa Pool Section
Woonoongoora walkers’camp to the Settlement campground
9 KM, 4-5 hrs

In Feb, 2010, unfortunately I just walked part of this great walk. It would be great and  if I could walk whole track in March  24-28, 2011.

See #19-23 of "Sydneyhiking Club"
http://www.freeoz.org/ibbs/thread-876952-1-1.html

for past experience.

MOUNT WARNING
The Hinterland of The Tweed Heads of New South Wales, is also only short distance from Springbrook National Park of Queensland.

Mt Warning is also the great place in Australia to see sunrise in early morning.

Mount Warning remains significant to Aboriginal people, providing a traditional mythology that extends back to the dreamtime. Called 'Wollumbin,' meaning 'fighting chief of the mountains,' the Aboriginal people believed that lightning and thunder observed on the mountain were warring warriors and that landslides were wounds obtained in battle.

The mountain was named by Captain Cook to warn future mariners of the offshore reefs he encountered in May 1770.

Reserved for public recreation in 1928, Mount Warning was dedicated as a national park in 1966. Inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage Listings in 1986, along with other NSW rainforest parks, ensures its protection for future generations.

There are two tracks in this region.

SUMMIT TRACK
Winding upwards from the Breakfast Creek parking area is the Mount Warning Summit Track, which passes through a variety of vegetation communities. Subtropical and temperate rainforest, wet sclerophyll forest and heath shrubland are all encountered on your journey upward. After a final rock scramble the track emerges to 360 degree views reaching every distant horizon.

Evident from this vantage point is the enormous eroded bowl of the caldera landform. Twenty million years ago the height of the volcano was twice the present height of Mount Warning. This volcano was formed by massive outpourings of lava, layer after layer, over a landscape that stretched from Mt. Tamborine in the north to Lismore in the south. Westward it extended to Kyogle and its eastern remnants occur as reefs at Point Danger.

The height of the volcano alone was sufficient to trap moisture laden air from the coast. Over the millennium the myriad of small streams produced by this trapped moisture, carved out this unique and curious landform. Harder rocks resisted this erosion such as the rhyolite cliffs of the caldera rim and the rock composition of the central chamber. These stand as stark testimony of the grandeur that once was.

Duration: 4-5 hr return.
Degree of difficulty: Strenuous.

Track condition: Steep and rocky in parts. Winter warning: Not advisable to undertake the walk after 2 pm in winter, as darkness on the return can lead to people becoming lost.

LYREBIRD TRACK
A shorter walk catering for the less energetic, the Lyrebird Track crosses Breakfast Creek before winding some 200 m through palm forest to a platform set amongst the lush subtropical rainforest.

What a day and what a climb. It started at 4am for me with a 2 hr drive to the campsite, and all was going well until we got to the vertical climb. I knew it was going to be hard hard day, but hard was an understatement!! I don't know how i got out of it with out any broken bones since i landed on my butt so many times  It was a great day and in good company. We all worked together to reach the goal. Even though it was mostly overcast, I don't think i every sweated so much in my life. We could have bottled it. We made to the site in one piece,  had some lunch, then headed off the Point Lookout cache. Then we had to face the challenge of getting back to the car. I think this was just as hard as getting up to the site.
I have to mention a special thanks to Chris, Tony and Paul. About half way down Paul asked me to check the track on my GPSr. I went to grab it and suddenly realised I didn't have it on my side anymore!! I couldn't believe it!! I was absolutely exhausted and thought s&%t, i'm going to have to climb the mountain again!! [xx(] before i knew it Tony and Paul were off back up the climb, to where i'd had slipped over to see if it was there. Chris followed soon after. I felt ill and stayed with the backpacks and tried to regain some energy. Soon after they all returned with the GPSr in hand. I had left it sitting on a log up higher where we had stopped for a rest. Even though it was only about 500m away, they would have climbed about 250m in elevation to get there. Thanks again Guys.
There was great relief once we had made it to the bottom and had a rest in the creek to cool off. My muscles are still aching 2 days later. Thanks for organising the walk Griffo and thanks guys for a fun challenging day, it was an awesome sense of achievement.
--------------------------
The day was clear after previous rain and we arrived much earlier this time parking downstream of the still flowing causeway. We walked 15 minutes to the Lamington Park entrance just beyond the head of the road where there is space for 3-4 cars to park. It was 8.15am. Here, 200m into the walk it was necessary to cross Christmas Creek by walking over a large fallen tree several metres above the rapids below. The trail is quite indistinct but with the Lamington 1:25000 topographic map we made the 2 ½ km walk to Westray’s grave in about 2 hours, crossing Christmas Creek near where the South Branch joins. Along the way we marked several waypoints “Hansel and Gretel” style, such as the waterfall and where the track gives access to the picturesque pools and rapids. About 300m after the creek crossing, following the South Branch was Westray’s grave in a peaceful location. Backtracking 100 metres was an orange metal arrow pointing up the spur. The average gradient from Westray’s grave to the Stinson campground (cache) is 1:2.5 over the 1500m of trail shown on the map. This is where our troubles started. The first 300m has a gradient of 1:1 straight up, after which the trail becomes indistinct. Thankfully previous trekkers have placed coloured ribbon and/or orange metal arrows to guide a course up to the escarpment. Here we lost the path and a good half hour trying to find a route around the escarpment. In the end we had to climb straight up the slippery vertical 7m rocky impasse. We continued about 100m toward the ridgeline and thankfully intersected the trail. From Westray’s grave to the top of the escarpment had taken nearly 2 hours for a 200m horizontal gain toward the campsite/cache. At this point we used the GPS co-ordinates for the campsite/cache to guide us the remaining 1300m/1 hour walk along a more easily discernable trail. However about 100m in we could not make out the trail, it became very steep and my doubts rose as to whether this was the trail. We could see an open canopy section of forest with a dead tree standing tall in the middle of dense undergrowth. We only had 10 minutes left to look for the cache and were unsuccessful. With clouds rolling in, thunder sounding and a storm approaching we thought “discretion was the better part of valour” and started our return at 2.30pm, concerned about the escarpment and fading daylight. The trail led us straight back to the escarpment edge-not around. There was no time to waste so I sacrificed the 30 feet of rope I had been carrying to make a lean-to shelter in case of emergency, and we went straight over the side. I was thankful for the GPS waypoints I had marked as this made the return trip downhill much more straightforward. It took 3 ½ hours to return and in fading light we reached the entry of the park at 6.15pm, 10 hours after we had started. My son and I gave each other a high-5, happy that we had navigated our way there and had made it back in one piece

原来是lamington national park!以前听两个喜欢登山的意大利朋友兴奋说过,说那儿的track很难走,可是风景非常美,而且能看见能看见很多很多鸟。不知到您说的是不是下面的路线?
http://www.oreillys.com.au/lamington-national-park/bushwalking/full-day-walks/

Had great walks at the Hinterlands of Tweed Head and Gold Coast, and especially Mt Warning. We could see Mt Warning every day, from Gold Coast and Brisband of Queensland, to Cape Byron of New South Wales.

Many thanks mk82, 136dream's couple, farmer/good fish for very warm hospitality. We had Yumcha at Shangri-la and delicious BBQ at Farm/Goodfish's house in addtion to "great" walk with mk82 in secret place in Brisband.
