Melbourne, Victoria, with a population of nearly four million, is Australia's second-largest city. It's a city known for the arts and intellectual pursuits, restaurants and shopping opportunities. And it's home to people from many cultures who've all brought something to add to the mix.
Before white settlement, the area at the head of Port Phillip Bay was home to the Coolan people, who hunted and fished here for 30,000 years. When it was settled, one of the first settlers was Batman. Not the caped crusader, but John Batman, a farmer. An early suggestion for the name of the settlement was Batmania. Unfortunately, instead it was named after the British prime minister Lord Melbourne.
The Port Phillip District became a prosperous farming settlement with a healthy wool trade. But it was the discovery of gold at nearby Ballarat and Bendigo that gave Melbourne its status as a city of wealth. In 1851, there were about 23,000 people in Melbourne, but by 1860, Victoria's population reached half a million, the people drawn by the hope of riches. Melbourne quickly became an important city, and in 1880, it staged an international exhibition in what's now known as Exhibition Buildings. Don't tell Sydneysiders, but for a while, Melbourne had more people than Sydney.
After the Second World War, Melbourne was a destination for migrants from Europe, especially for Jewish people and people from the United Kingdom, Greece, Turkey, Italy, Yugoslavia and Lebanon. It was often said that the Greek population of Melbourne was second only to that of Athens, and it was often called the Athens of the South. Many migrants tended to settle in particular areas of the city, and you can still see that influence now. Such as Lygon Street, with its Italian restaurants and coffee shops. Acland Street in St Kilda, with its Jewish cake shops. After the 1970s, further waves of immigrants came, this time from Asia, especially Vietnam, Cambodia and China.
Unlike Sydney with its harbour, the city of Melbourne has a river running through it - the Yarra - and in recent times, a lot of work has been done on making the most of this. Melbourne is characterised by its mix of graceful Edwardian buildings, such as Flinders Street Station and some bold new architecture, such as Federation Square, the new Southern Cross Station and Eureka Tower, the world's tallest apartment building. But Melbourne people aren't easily impressed. They've got too much else to do.
Melbourne is famous for its shopping streets, from high fashion to grunge, and for its sophisticated cultural life - it's the centre for avant-garde theatre and art - and for its restaurants, bars and clubs. There's always plenty to do in Melbourne. It's also the place where they hung Australia's most famous bushranger, Ned Kelly. And the Olympic Games was held here in 1956. Oh, and the Parliament of Australia was here too, from 1901, until it moved to Canberra. But Melburnians probably care more about it being the centre for Australian Rules Football. Strangely enough, the ground where it's played is called the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Oh, well, we love cricket too, just not as much.

You know, I tend to think if you forcefully translate eveything into your native langauge, it's counter productive to improving your English skills.

Try to understand English on it's own terms.

Thanks for your kind advice, I'll try.

Instead of "I'll try."
Use "I'll give it a go." next time It's more casual.

OK. I'll give it a go. Thanks for advice.
