NEW YORK - The reigning Miss California has gone to Washington to help launch a campaign opposing same-sex marriage.

Carrie Prejean told NBC's "Today" show Thursday that she'll be working with the National Organization for Marriage to "protect traditional marriages."

The 21-year-old says that marriage is "something that is very dear to my heart" and she's in Washington to help save it.

She says many people have thanked her for standing up for traditional marriage.

Prejean was named the first runner-up to Miss North Carolina in the Miss USA pageant April 19. Her response to celebrity blogger Perez Hilton's question about legalizing same-sex marriage may have cost her the title.

Miss California Carrie Prejean topless pictures are making their way to the web, and could cost her the state crown.
In a photo posted on Thedirty.com,seen in part to the left, a tan brunette in pink underwear with herarms across her chest and her back to the camera, is seen smiling overher shoulder at the camera. But with the photo, Prejean may be inviolation of her contract.
According to the AP:

Pageant spokesman Roger Neal said Tuesday it appearsthe 21-year-old Prejean has run afoul of several sections of the12-page contract that prospective contestants were required to signbefore competing in the state contest.
The contract contains a clause asking participants whether theyhave conducted themselves "in accordance with the highest ethical andmoral standards" and if they've ever been photographed nude orpartially nude.

Prejean has releaseda statement about the photo seen below, an implicit confirmation thatthis photo, and others reportedly being shopped around, are indeed ofher. Her hair is brown and the photos are from before her pageant-funded breast implants.
The statement reads:

"My comments defending traditional marriage have led tointimidation tactics that seek to undermine my reputation and somehowsilence me and my beliefs, as if opinion is only a one-way street.
"I am a Christian, and I am a model. Models pose for pictures,including lingerie and swimwear photos. Recently, photos taken of me asa teenager have been released surreptitiously to a tabloid website thatopenly mocks me for my Christian faith.
"I am not perfect, and I will never claim to be. But these attackson me and others who speak in defense of traditional marriage areintolerant and offensive. While we may not agree on every issue, weshould show respect for others' opinions and not try to silence themthrough vicious and mean-spirited attacks."

Prejean now claims she was only 17 when the photo was taken, and the full photo has been removed.
