by a careers website regarding mistakes candidates made during interviews. Below are some of the ‘interview horrors’ that
interviewers have faced followed by some results of the survey.
Horror stories from interviewers:
• The candidate that brushed her hair during an interview.
• The man who sniffed his armpits on the way to the interview room.
• The candidate who asked the interviewer for a ride home after the interview.
• The candidate who flushed the toilet during a phone interview.
Survey results:
• Dressing inappropriately: This was considered by the managers interviewed as the biggest mistake a job seeker could make
during an interview. 51% of those interviewed ranked this as the biggest mistake.
• Complaining about a former employer came in second, with 49% of managers interviewed ranking this as the biggest
mistake.
• Seeming disinterested: this was ranked third by the managers interviewed (48%)
This article also provided some tips to avoid blunders during interviews. The tips listed include:
• Turn off your mobile phone: keeping it on during an interview takes away your credibility as it says to the interviewer that
waiting for another call is more important than the interview itself.
• Stay professional: apart from dressing appropriately, other factors that should be considered in this area are not using slang
and refraining from telling too many personal details.
• Avoid arrogance: try to avoid projecting a ‘you should be pleased I’m here’ attitude during interviews. Despite previous
successes, it is still important to show initiative and learn about the company or show interest in the company suggests Ms
Connors (owner of Interview for Success).
• Don’t talk about money in the first interview.
• Engage the interviewer: via eye contact, body language and addressing everyone if there is a panel of interviewers.
