CAPE CORAL -
A Cape Coral mother says she needs help raising tens of thousands of dollars to bring back her son's body from China to Southwest Florida.

Tylar Dobbins died of a sudden illness. Now his grieving and overwhelmed mother is looking to leaders in Washington for help.

It was just days before his 20th birthday that Dobbins lost his life.

"As much as he drove me crazy sometimes, I mean I would give anything for him to be back and be driving me crazy now," said his mother, Paula Kemp,

After Dobbins graduated from East Lee County High School last year, he went to China to teach conversational English.

But last Wednesday morning, his mother says Dobbins felt sick and his friend brought him to clinics and then to hospitals as he got progressively worse and waited to be treated.

Shortly thereafter, he was pronounced dead. His friend made the dreadful call home.

"I at that point, I could not comfort my children. And they were holding onto me, trying to comfort me," Kemp said.

The hospital says Dobbins died from a form of meningitis.

But aside from dealing with the sudden loss of her first child, Kemp is now burdened with getting her son's body back to the United States at a staggering cost of $20,000.

"I am angry that I am having to go through all of this. It shouldn't be this hard," she said.

Instead of planning a funeral, Kemp spent her day sending birth certificates abroad - confirming it is her son who passed.

She also has an attorney who is working to see if her son's diagnosis was correct and also if there is a less expensive way to bring her son home.

"I've had to put my grief on a back burner. Anger is in force, determination is in force, and I just have to keep a focus because if I let myself go now, I'll be useless. And I can't be useless. I have to do whatever it takes to bring him home," Kemp said.

Kemp says at the latest, she hopes to have her son home at the end of the month.

Senator Bill Nelson's office contacted the U.S. Consul General in China on the family's behalf and is waiting for a response.

In the meantime, there is a benefit set up for Tylar Dobbins and it will be at Ale Mary's off of US-41 in south Lee County from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday, August 14 - what would have been Tylar's 20th birthday.

There will also be a Tylar dobbins Bowling Benefit at Friendship Lanes in Cape Coral. That event will be on Sunday, August 21. Registration will starts at 1 p.m.

Finally, the family has set up the Tylar Dobbins Memorial Fund and you can make a donation at any Wells Fargo Bank.
