LYNDAL CURTIS: Julia Gillard, welcome to PM.
JULIA GILLARD: Thank you.
LYNDAL CURTIS: When you got the news that interest rates were on hold did you breathe a sigh of relief?
JULIA GILLARD: Well on behalf of Australian families and businesses that are doing it tough I was glad to see that interest rates were on hold. I understand that for them this takes a bit of pressure off. So for those families and those businesses clearly not having interest rates move today does take a bit of pressure off.
LYNDAL CURTIS: Some areas of the economy though are still struggling and your Government has said it wants to speed up the lower of the two-speed economy to drive economic growth. If economic growth does get faster that will eventually mean interest rate rises won't it?
JULIA GILLARD: Well we've been investing in the skills and capacities of the Australian people. We've been investing in infrastructure.
Let's remember when we came to Government we inherited inflation at a 16-year high. We set about investing in growing the capacity of the economy to take some pressure off. Then of course the global financial crisis changed our world and when that happened I believe we made the better economic choices. We made a choice to support jobs.
And if we'd taken Mr Abbott's advice then we wouldn't have done that and we'd be in a recession now and more than 200,000 Australians extra would be out of work.
So Lyndal what I would say is we had the better economic plan then and we've got the better economic plan for the future.

TONY ABBOTT: You can't change the rules just because you're in trouble. Labor had the chance to have three debates at the start of the campaign. They repeatedly refused. And frankly things have moved on. The time for changing the rules has passed.
REPORTER 1: So you're changing your mind because you're in front now?
REPORTER 2: Are you dropping your request for two more debates? Because you did call for two more. Will you agree to have one at some point in the next three weeks?
TONY ABBOTT: And subsequent to that the Prime Minister publicly refused. Now are you suggesting to me that when it comes from Julia no doesn't mean no? I mean perhaps, which Julia was talking to me?
But the truth is I can't be expected to know whether it's the real Julia or someone else who was talking. She said no repeatedly and when she said no I thought she meant no.
MARK COLVIN: And Tony Abbott used variants of that "no means no, no doesn't mean no" line four times so it was not exactly accidentally. And it's excited some comment because it's usually used in another context.
Tony Abbott
LYNDAL CURTIS: Yes it's usually a message more associated with an anti-rape message, the no means no.
Now Tony Abbott said that he, that's not what he intended, that he is not insensitive to women. He's a father of daughters.
And certainly the Labor Party is playing very safe. They're not attacking Tony Abbott over it. As you heard Julia Gillard, Julia Gillard didn't criticise him over it. The criticism as you said has come from some commentators, some people's initial reaction to hearing what Tony Abbott said.
