Logan City knocks Gold Coast off as Queensland's No. 1 burglary hotspot
CRIME SPREE: An RACQ survey has found Logan City homes - including those in acreage suburbs Boronia Heights, Greenbank and New Beith - have been the most vulnerable to theft.Source: News Limited
LOGAN City has taken the mantle once held by the Gold Coast as the state's home burglary capital, according to research by a major insurer.
Logan, which is currently receiving the lion's share of new beat cops, dominates the list of break-in hot spots identified by RACQ in its annual Home Security Index.
Homes in the postcode 4124 - taking in acreage suburbs Boronia Heights, Greenbank and New Beith on Logan's semirural fringe - are the most vulnerable to theft, the RACQ found.
Crestmead and Marsden (4132) and former Gold Coast Council suburbs around Beenleigh (4207) were the second and third worst postcodes.
Even residents of Logan's marquee suburbs of Daisy Hill and Springwood found themselves in the state's fifth worst postcode for break-ins (4127).
The same survey 13 years ago ranked only one Logan suburb, Woodridge, in its top 10.
Gold Coast suburbs in the top 5 that year - Southport (1st), Robina (3rd), Labrador (4th) and Nerang (5th) - did not even get a look in 2012.
The renewed focus on resources in Logan by police hierarchy is reflected in the injection of 17 of 46 new recruits with prior policing experience to the region.
Police Minister Jack Dempsey said on Friday: "It is particularly pleasing to see an injection of 17 additional experienced (first year constables) to Logan."
Home break-ins in 2011-12 rose 10 per cent statewide, and 15 per cent in the southeastern region taking in both Logan and the Gold Coast, according to Queensland police statistics.
RACQ spokesman Mike Sopinski said: "The rule of thumb is insurers do in tough economic times see a rise in property theft claims."
The survey by the state's second-largest home and contents insurer found one in five Queenslanders had had their home burgled at some time.
One in four victims were home during a burglary, it found.
Mr Sopinski said one in three admitted making it easier for thieves by sometimes leaving their house unlocked.
This belied a "considerable fear of property crime across the community", with almost half of all householders saying they were concerned about leaving their home in case it were burgled.
The most common ways in for thieves was to force open a door (38 per cent) or window (35 per cent), followed by simply opening an unlocked door (17 per cent) or window (8 per cent).
One in 100 break-ins took place through a dog or cat door.
Cash was the most common target (12 per cent) for burglars, followed by jewellery (11.2 per cent), laptop computers (5.1 per cent) and wallets or handbags (4.1 per cent).
Sought-after items also included flat-screen TVs (3.5 per cent), mobile phones (2.8 per cent), designer clothing (1.9 per cent) and identification documents such as driver's licences (1.8 per cent).
The RACQ Home Security Index ranked suburbs according to the number of claims per 100 policies.
The insurer's top tips to safeguard against burglaries include locking premises, even high windows or doors to balconies, and keeping expensive but portable items such as laptops, iPods and jewellery out of sight.

30-6-2013 08:00 static/image/common/back.gif
