Build up vocabulary from the news

Enjoy vocabulary building!

ride on Australia's coattails

Tobacco products complying with the world’s first plain-packaging laws started arriving in Australia’s stores around Oct. 1, when the country’s A$10 billion ($10.37 billion) tobacco industry was hit with strict constraints on how it can package and sell cigarettes. Similar regulations, backed by the World Health Organization, are being weighed in the U.K., New Zealand, Turkey, and the EU. “With so many countries lined up to ride on Australia’s coattails, what we hope to see is a domino effect for the good of public health,” Margaret Chan, the WHO’s director general, said in a statement.

New rules aim to head off another economic cataclysm but come with costs

几个在此处使用很形象的词:
The 2008 financial crisis roiled the banking system and swamped the global economy, leaving millions of Americans jobless, underemployed or facing foreclosure. In its wake, Congress set out to overhaul how the government oversees Wall Street. The result was a sprawling law, the Dodd-Frank Act, which aims to prevent future crises by giving the government new tools and restricting banks' activities. The law may make future crises less likely, but it increases costs for companies, especially banks, and their customers.

喝液氮导致胃穿孔,不得不切除胃来救命

A TEENAGER nearly died and had her stomach removed in hospital after drinking a cocktail containing liquid nitrogen.

She first felt breathless, then developed severe stomach pain and was taken to Lancaster Royal Infirmary, where doctors diagnosed a perforated stomach.

Ms Scanlan was rushed to surgery where her stomach was removed in order to save her life.

Local director of public health Dr John Aston said Ms Scanlan was the victim of an "irresponsible alcohol industry that's now competing on gimmicks(噱头)."

Nitrogen takes liquid form at 196 degrees below zero Centigrade. Thanks to the 'Liedenfrost Effect', people will survive brief contact with liquid nitrogen unscathed. But longer exposures will cause 'cryogenic burns'(低温冻伤) and kill unprotected flesh in the same way as frostbite.

Industry fears homeowner panic as flood agreement expiration approaches

Brokers in high flood-risk areas have accused the Association of British Insurers of failing to "nail its colours to the mast" amid growing concern over the lack of a long-term replacement for the Statement of Principles.

Elvin, who is also the British Insurance Brokers' Association chair for Yorkshire and Northern England, said: "The ABI has been cautious at best. It is not nailing its colours to the mast, but it needs to because people will start panicking.
