WA heroin 'strongest in country'

HEROIN in Western Australia continues to be the nation's most potent, a report by the Australian Crime Commission (ACC) has shown.
In the 2010/11 financial year, the average purity level of heroin seized by police in WA was 48 per cent, which was the highest level in Australia.
Over that one-year period, the purity of heroin around the nation ranged from 10.2 per cent in Queensland to 57 per cent in WA.
In 2009/10, the purity of heroin in WA was as high as 63 per cent.
However, it was the only jurisdiction where the actual weight of heroin seized fell in 2010/11.
WA Police provided key data to the report, including information on illicit drug seizures and arrests.
WA Police Assistant Commissioner (Crime) Nick Anticich said understanding the makeup of illicit drugs was important to law enforcement as it allowed for comparisons within and between seizures to identify distinct batches of drugs or potential links between groups involved in manufacturing or trafficking.
Drug profiling could identify other harmful chemicals that the end user might be surprised to find in their drugs, ACC chief executive John Lawler said.
"It can identify source countries, manufacturing trends and drug content,'' Mr Lawler said.
The report showed the Australian drug market was increasingly diverse, both in terms of importation and distribution.
