Inspired by the Arctic landscape, the Sydney Ice Bear is a life-sized representation of a hunting male polar bear. This magnificent life- sized ICE sculpture will be at Customs House, Circular Quay from Friday 3 June to Friday 10 June. Also, be part of a free public event on World Environment Day on Sunday 5 June from 12.30pm and win a trip for two to the Arctic with Aurora Expeditions. Come and see Sydney Ice Bear, touch it, see it melt….. and you’ll want to help.
Renowned British sculptor Mark Coreth will carve the life-sized melting ice sculpture of a polar bear at Customs House Square on Friday 3 June from 7am. The Sydney Ice Bear will melt over the next 3-4 days with only its bronze skeleton remaining – a poignant metaphor for the human impact on our environment. A public event will be held in Customs House Square on Sunday 5 June to mark World Environment Day.
The public are invited to touch Sydney Ice Bear at Customs House Square, Circular Quay, from Friday 3 June as it slowly melts, revealing the bronze skeleton of a life-size polar bear, measuring 2.2 metres high and 4 metres long.
Supported by the Purves Environmental Fund, Sydney Ice Bear will raise much-needed funds for the three partner environmental organisations, WWF-Australia, 1 million women and Australian Youth Climate Coalition (AYCC). Each of the three groups will have information booths at Customs House Square, providing ideas for personal climate change action. Ice Bear will also be lit at night with LED lights, complementing Vivid Sydney’s 3D light projection at Customs House.
Sydney Ice Bear is the sixth appearance of the inspirational sculpture which, according to Mark Coreth, highlights the important nexus between art and environment. Since 2009 as part of its world tour, Ice Bear has appeared in Copenhagen, London, Toronto, Montreal and Manchester, highlighting the urgent need for action on climate change www.icebearproject.org. |
