FIRST-home buyers will save up to $6200 on stamp duty from July.
The saving will rise to more than $15,000 when the promised 50 per cent cut to the housing tax is phased in by late 2014.
From July 1, first-home buyers will get a 20 per cent discount, or a saving of $4394 on a $500,000 house.
Stamp duty will then be cut a further 10 per cent a year for three years.
By September 2014, first-home buyers will save $10,985 on a $500,000 home and $15,535 on a $600,000 property.
The policy, costing the Government more than $400 million over five years, does not apply to houses worth more than $600,000.
The $7000 first-home owner's grant and the $13,000 bonus for new homes will be retained.
Master Builders Association of Victoria executive director Brian Welch welcomed the relief.
"Victorians currently pay the highest rate of stamp duty in Australia and the cuts announced will put Victoria back on the path of further property tax reform," Mr Welch said.

50 per cent cut to the housing tax is phased in by late 2014. That, I'm afraid will not happen. The State's revenue will be taking a huge hit by declining property prices during 2011, 2012 & 2013.

Once again, another party blowing the property bubble! I think in 3 years the median house price will exeed well over $600K in Melbourne and this policy will be useless for many!

Sorry but Ted's rich mates in the property industry are slugging young home buyers for $450,000 for a house 40 km from the city - how does $4,000 help? Ted needs to stop the land rip offs going on now in Melton and Craigieburn etc and get house and land packages back below $350,000. Then first home buyers will come back into the market.

Unaffordable housing problem has been caused by govt grants and subsidies. KRudd's increased FHOG (buying votes), Negative gearing. Also mass immigration and allowing foreign investment doesnt help either. So they decide to do more damage.
