Topic: Universities should accept equal number of male and female students in every subject. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
There are many controversial topics on how universities should provide equal opportunities to their students. Some people suggest that the universities should accept equal number of male and female student in every subject. However, it is still questionable whether such an approach can achieve the real equality or fairness.
In general, it has been widely accepted that women should be assigned with the same rights as their counterparts. Therefore, any form of sexual discrimination should be strictly prohibited in universities, which is particularly important when they are reviewing the applications of the new candidates. Therefore, ensuring a fixed portion of female students can ensure that the candidates will not be judged by their gender and can also helps to promote the state of of female students after they enter the campus.
However, we should realize that it is impractical to enforce exactly the same number of female and male students on every subject. After all, male and female students may demonstrate different level of interests on some specific subjects. For example, for most engineering majors, the number of male applicants is usually much larger than that of female ones. Therefore, it would be unfair to the male applicants, if we try to enroll as many female students as on these subjects. And there will be a similar problem for some other subjects, such as music or arts, where the female applicants may dominate.
In conclusion, although it is good to encourage universities to enroll as many female students as male, it is unnecessary or even unfair to make the number of the two genders exactly the same. Instead, I think a good alternative approach would be ensuring a minimum ratio of female students on each department when considering their applications. |
