I have stayed in Australia for more than a month and have a work for 2 weeks. I find that if you can't speak english fluently, Local people always think you are a foreigner even they are your workmates. They don't like to talk to you. Face to face talking I think if you pass ielts 5 is enough for understand what they talk about. But during a meeting or speech or lecture, you can not know why they laugh. When chating with people, you don't catch what they are saying.
I always afraid to have a cup of tea or coffee duing work. There are some foot and snacks there, but if you go to eat. You will have a short chat with them. For me, it is a tortore, you can not chat stored precedure there. 8-)
Looking for a technical work here, I think it is not too difficult. English is a big problem, but it is not an obstacle. Because work is the same like you done in China. The only change is that you use english. So the english of you major is important, you must have good ability about technology terms and definitions, don't make mistake.
