Assange Lawyer In Djokovic Case: Australian Minister’s Decision Is Extremely Dangerous Precedent 2022.1.20
THE Greg Barnes, his lawyer Julian Assange and WikiLeaks legal adviser, said the Australian minister’s explanation for the abolition of visa for the tennis player Novak Djokovic was an “extremely dangerous precedent”, stating that political reasons were part of such a decision.
“Although it seems that there may have been administrative mistakes by many groups and individuals, these were not reasons for revoking Djokovic’s visa even for the first time. Finally, the minister said that the visa was revoked for the second time because of Djokovic’s views on vaccines and because these views may, as is well known, provoke an anti-vaccination mood. “This is an extremely dangerous precedent,” Barnes, a spokesman for the Australian Bar Association, told the Nedeljnik newspaper, according to Beta.
“The minister’s decision is dangerous, because in essence it says – if someone has views on issues that are controversial and important to Australia and the government does not like those views, they can revoke that person’s visa,” he said.
He said he was “concerned about the position of the Federal Government, that it does not have to prove that Djokovic will cultivate vaccination behaviors that are contrary to government policy, but that it can only incite those sentiments.”
“Inevitably, political reasons were part of the decision, because the concept of public interest is so broad that it allows the minister to take political reasons into account in practice, although in theory this should not be done. “The broad discretion given to the Australian Immigration Minister means that political considerations can lead to decisions that can have a serious impact on people’s lives,” Barnes said. |
