BOUQUET
A wonderfully expressive bouquet for an eight-year-old wine. There is still lovely dark broody fruit notes along with coffee, liquorice eucalyptus, damp earth, smoky leather and perfectly balanced oak.
PALATE
Fleshy red fruit flavours are still evident despite this wines obvious age. The flavours are opulent with mocha, cassis, soft port like characters along with smoked meats and pencil shavings.
WINEMAKING
After a reasonably wet winter across the region the vines burst well with good early shoot growth. McLaren Vale had a milder-than-usual summer with very few days of extreme temperatures, resulting in an excellent, even ripening period. The fruit was sourced from a single vineyard, a stones throw from the old Normans Winery at Clarendon located in Bakers Gully. The vines were planted in 1932 and 1940 and have twisted and become gnarled from the elements they have faced over the past 70+ years. In total around 10 tonne of fruit was produced at around 2 tonne to the acre and the fruit was hand picked and basket pressed then underwent traditional fermentation in small open top fermenters. The wine was aged for 6 years in oak hogshead. |
