Automatic versus manual: Which is better?

    Special offers

The popularity of automatic transmissions (they now comprise 95% of cars sold in Australia) over manuals raises, for car lovers, the question of which is better. Even among enthusiasts there is debate, as some simply enjoy the ease of autos, while many prefer the greater control offered by manual gearboxes, particularly for applications such as off roading and towing. But even an auto is not an auto; the advent of variable ratio transmissions has made the automatic more attractive still.
Automatics: The pros and cons

Clearly, automatics are simpler to drive than manuals, but is this the only difference?

Autos are more popular than manuals in Australia, most of Asia (with the exception of India) and America, but less so in Europe. Europeans generally tend to take their driving more seriously, and prefer the extra control manuals give
Continuously Variable Transmissions (CVTs) offer a considerably smoother ride than traditional autos and are becoming more popular in cars, particularly Nissans currently. They change the gears over a range, rather than set ratios
There is some concern about the safety of automatics over long distances, as the lack of interaction with the car can cause driver complacency and lack of concentration
As many people can only drive an auto, it may be difficult to find another driver for your manual car (important in an emergency or if you wish to drink)
Australian laws with regard to auto only licences have changed considerably in the past, and may differ from state to state.
Stop - start city driving is easier in an auto

Manuals: The pros and cons

Manuals are still preferred by many drivers.

The main advantage is in driving - manuals offer a great deal more driver control than autos. This is particularly advantageous in difficult driving, when you may select lower gears for power and control (in poor weather, slippery or muddy conditions and so forth), and for quick reaction and better control in emergencies
Manuals are better for towing. Towing can ruin an automatic transmission relatively quickly, and manuals are safer for heavy towing as they offer more control
Some drivers simply prefer manuals as they offer a more satisfying, interactive driving experience, and more to do while driving
    Manuals are cheaper
City driving can be irritating in a manual, with frequent stops and gear changes necessary, and speeds 'between gears' common
Manual resale value is lower as they are less popular

Autos and manuals: What's the difference?

Research suggests that manual gearboxes have lost popularity simply because they are more work and require more concentration that automatics. Clearly there are advantages both ways, and which you prefer may depend on the type of driving you will do. Don't automatically select an auto though. It can be worth considering a manual when you select your next car; they are cheaper, offer better control, and can create a more integrated interesting driving experience.
