BUSES will be grounded throughout Melbourne’s east and southeast for three days next week after Ventura bus drivers decided to strike.
A total of 23 bus services will not be operating between Monday and Wednesday, with Ventura announcing all route services out of the Knox and Oakleigh depots will not run.
The grounded services cover a significant area — from Mordialloc to Upper Ferntree Gully — and include the busy route 742 to Chadstone shopping centre.
Ventura and the Transport Workers Union are currently negotiating for a new enterprise bargaining agreement, but are fighting over weekend penalty rates and conditions that guarantee overtime.
A hearing at the Fair Work Commission is set down for 3pm today, with Ventura hoping the drivers will be ordered back to work.
Ventura general mangager Ron Hamilton said the company didn’t want to close down the services in the busy pre-Christmas period.
We’ve actually gone back to the Fair Work Commission and wanted a hearing as early as Monday to try to get this resolved,” he said.
“We’ve continued to talk to the union ... but these two issues are still on the table and are unresolved.
“We would prefer there would be no industrial action as we are aware of the impact on the travelling public particularly before Christmas.”
The Transport Workers Union did not return repeated calls by the Knox Leader.
The routes grounded between December 22 and 24 will be: 701, 703, 704, 706, 732, 733, 734, 735, 736, 737, 738, 740, 742, 745, 753, 754, 755, 757, 758, 765, 766, 767, 768 |
